Hello all.

1998 Expedition XLT

Example: If I am at a stop sign, and I take a turn 90deg (left or right) I get a grinding/vibrating from rear of the truck.

I took it to dealer ship for injector problems, but told them to look at the grinding problem to see what it was.

I cant quite remember what the guy told me what the problem was, because of the price to fix it :( but said that 2 things on or by the rear axle need to be changed.

I thought it was going to be the Differential becuase I think I read that somewhere. Does anyone have an idea of what problem could be?

Do you think that I could call the service dept and see if they have the problem on file?

Thanks

Hi,

I have a 2004 EB that I purchased a few months ago. I was experiencing the exact same problem that you mentioned. I have a personal Ford technician at my local dealer that is the only person that works on my vehicles. I gave him the truck for a couple of days and he verified the grinding and vibration. He checked everything thorougly from the front end to rear. His diagnosis is that my truck has the positive traction differential and it is the posi-clutch in the differential that is causing this. He told me that there is a fix for this but it involves taking the differential apart and replacing some parts. He said that he has seen several trucks with this problem. The repair is not cheap but not extremely expensive. He also told me that it is not doing any damage, but the grinding is a result of the normal functioning of the posi-clutch during sharp turns while accelerating. I do not know if your truck has the same differential, but I hope that this helps.

Try changing the fluid in the dif and make sure a positrac additive is added. If its not added or has to much the dif will 'grind' in turns because it wants to lock the wheels together. Happened to me, bought two bottles (4 oz) of that stuff and threw it in and significant decrease. Little bit every once in a while but I've been told if you put to much it has the opposite effect so I'm happy where it is now.
