Is there a way to test the relay? There is no clicking when switch is moved. Tested switch, It works. Pulled wire harness off shift motor. Light finally comes on in dash but still no click from relay. Put wire harness back on motor, No light and nothing. By the way finally found where the relay is located. what a pain in the butt...

Yes you can test them - you'll need a dvm or a way to make a testing harness. It is easier to test the harness for power than the relay. How many wire are there going to it 4-5?

Do you have a test light or dvm? What year are we dealing with?
I looked at the manual for my 99 and there are a bunch of wires to the transfer case relay. They have also wired the GEM into the equation. I would expect some digging to find what has failed.

Ok it's a 97. The shift motor is getting power. Tested switch and that works. Gem haven't messed with it. The thing is the relay never clicks at all. There is 12 volts being sent to it. just a test light and meter.

It might be a solid state relay. No moving parts in those. If you're getting the proper voltages at the motor then the relay is fine.

Whats more likely to go. Relay or gem. Also notice when I disconnect the shift motor harness , the lights come on in dash.

Even though no clicking ?

Solid state relays have no internal moving parts. So there's nothing to make the clicking noise. I used them at my last job to control high amp heating coils in the temp chambers.

OP: Let me ask a stupid question at this point...Since you have power at the shift motor, does it shift in and out of 4wd?
