I wouldn't do 35's unless you plan on doing a lot of work, you can get a 3" body list and put 35's on but then your stressing a lot of parts and you will wipe out the rear diff and possibly your transfer / transmission I have 285 75 16 (33's) on stock suspension. just giving you a heads up.
You've got 285/75/16 with no lift or leveling kit? did you have any rubbing or interference with those or is it alright? I want 33's on my 06, 285/70/17 but thought I will need at least a 2" front leveling kit?

What do you mean wipe out the rear diff? My parents just gave me their 98, and it is equipped with 35" tires. Should I be worried?
Gen 1's are a different animal. I wouldn't worry.
Gen 2 switched to 4 wheel independent suspension.
Roger that. It's had 35's on it for years, and the parents haven't had an issue with it, of course they never took it wheeling either. It is a slug with the stock gears though. That is on my to-do list.

They might have switched to independent but the gear ratio is not meant to handle 35" tires
