Anyone have any info on why a front seat heat would not be working? Passenger side is fine but drivers seat has never worked since I bought the truck. If the seat has an element, is it easy to replace? Are there checks I can do to troubleshoot why it would not be working? I would rather not replace the seat just for this, as my seats are like brand new. Any info on this would be great!

you should be able to unplug the element(s) at the harness and use a multimeter to do a continuity test. Typically a seat that won't heat up has a broken element in my experiences with heated seats in other vehicles.

depends on the seats. On BMW cars the element is sewn into the seat cover so you need to replace the whole cover, whether it's the bottom cushion or the backrest cushion.

I may be adding elements to my expy's front seats at some point using an aftermarket kit. I have heard of others using aftermarket kits to replace a stock heated seat setup as well since you can just pull the seat cover off and run the elements underneath.

Mindframe, the seat heater elements are woven into a fabric liner of the seat. So, you have 2 options. I will discuss this later. As for what your problem is, odds are it is the heating elements. Keep in mind that you have 2 of them. 1 is in the seat bottom, the other is located in the lower back of the seat back. To access them you have to pull the skin off of the seat which will then expose a white sleeve that is over the foam rubber. This white sleeve houses the heating element. Odds are, when you get access to this white sleeve, you will see some black/dark brown spots in it. That is where your heating elements most likely failed.

Now, for the repair. The obvious one is putting new white sleeves in. But, stand by for what they cost. I think you might consider option 2 first.

The other repair is to use a multimeter and probe to either side of the burn marks till you can find good heater element. This is going to involve ripping the white fabric to expose the metal banding that is underneath. Once you have good metal, you will need to cut a piece of wire that is about 1" longer than the space between the two points of good metal. Strip back about 1/2" of wire on each end of the wire and then solder the wire to bridge over the burn spot. Do this for each and every dark spot. As for wiring, I would say to use something like 16 gauge or 14 gauge stranded wire. The key being stranded wire. You need something that is flexible so it won't break on you in the near future.

the bad thing about making repairs to the heating elements is that you may get them working for a short time but unless you replace the complete elements you will have the old elements break in new spots and your be back to your problem again.

I would suggest that you get a good wiring diagram and troubleshoot the circuit to see where the problem is before you go taking the seat covers apart

Do as suggested by 2000UN93. Also check the heat switch to see if its working

If you need a wiring diagram for the seat heaters let me know

I have the same problem as the original post and i have considered doing the wire bridge but i was unsure if it was a good idea. I will have to pull the seat apart to see how bad my elements are.

again the wire bridge may be a good fix but in my opinion all you are doing is putting a Band-Aid on elements that have seen many miles and many time that someone has slid their a$$ over them That is also why the drivers seat seems to go first I know most of my driving is solo and that means less wear and tear on the Passenger seat

Just had this quoted by my Ford dealership. To fix the issues you are looking at $400-$500.
Its unfortunate, bought the expy 3 weeks ago, heated seat broke after a week.:emotions122:

At first I would say if you only owned it for 3 weeks than it should be covered under warranty. But then its a 1ST Gen so that means that its over 10 years old and most likely over 100000 miles on it. Things don't last forever.

Check you electrical system out first to see what is wrong. You can also check on E-Bay and get aftermarket heater elements
