On my '98 Navigator, I know I pushed the speedometer's needle past the maximum speed indicated and pressed against the little bar that keeps the needle from going any further.

Hung their for five seconds and then let off on the gas.

Today on Hwy 270 South between Hwy 44 & Gravois (St. Louis) around 11:30am, reached a top speed of 102 MPH. Attempting to go beyond that the engine was governed(sp?) and my speed did not exceed 102.

I also have the heavy duty trailer tow package so I don't know what that has to do with my top speeds or RPM range, shift points etc.

I had a (either Great Planes or Kyosho) Viper with a .46 OS w/ tuned pipe that flew at speeds 140+, that was fun until I had radio failure and it crashed into the ground... :( I really miss that hobby...

Well, actually the red lights should be behind you and the blue lights in front. When you are driving that fast, close to the speed of light, you should see things red-shift in the rear and blue-shift ahead of you.

this weekend i went over a 100 and the rpm was around 3500
the rpm slowly went up and the speed also slowly went up, I tried to see how far it'll go but then there was construction ahead

Close...

The 03's and up are definitely governed at 100.

I was driving on I 25 in New Mexico on a flat stretch and put my pedal to the floor, didn't top it out because the wind threw me over half a lane (no one was around for miles) and I had a luggage rack on my receiver hitch, a bike on a typical clip on rack, and a large bag up on top and I managed 105. I'll try a top speed run without a load and see what she can do some other time. I have an 04 XLT 4.6 bone stock. I was running on a half and half tank of 89 and 86 octane.

Lol I just noticed how old this thread is, brought this one back from the dead.

Mine is definitely governed @ 100, it won't do a mile over that so it's time for a programmer! My 03 Crown Vic PI speedo went up to 140 I had it to 137, I could've done well over that but had somebody cut into my lane getting on the highway about 1/8 mile ahead of me so i had to let off. A buddy of mine had an 01with light mods and he had his buried but his gps was reading 155 so I know I could've done better.

I have had mine at about 108 in the quarter mile. Fairly sure it will exceed that given more than 1320 feet. Yes I removed the speed limiter in the tune.

As for the street I wouldn't say..... :angels2: Speedo does only register to 100mph... but have checked max speed on my gps. Much faster than I should have.

These beast do not exactly stop on a dime but luckily they have the aerodynamics of a brick so it helps slow them down from speed!!

I removed the 100 mph governor on mine. Probably never see it though. I'll drive my Cougar id I want to go fast. When I get it back on the road that is.

I did hit an indicated 134 in my old Focus. GPS said I did 133. Wasn't done accelerating but saw a white vehicle ahead in the Arizona desert. Probably woulda hit 140.

I don't know, guys. I had an '84 RX-7 and got it up to about 125 on the speedo. But at around 120 I started to feel the need for a rear spoiler as it started to become a little unstable. It wasn't gradual - as soon as I hit 120 it started. t can't imagine trying to get one of our massive bricks up to that speed. No way it's safe.

I can say that my expedition feels remarkably stable at speed given its aerodynamics. Though wind noise and drivetrain vibrations become much more pronounced. Enough so to convince me to slow down. My guess is the sheer weight makes up for a lot as far as down force is concerned. But that is also what makes it scary as you know it will take much more room to slow down safely if anything unforeseen may happen. With the high center of gravity and weight any emergency maneuvers at speed is not likely to turn out well. I could not imagine what could happen if you had a blow out at high speed and it has crossed my mind when I am running at the track.

I do agree its not the safest vehicle to test high speed capability but do admit to opening her up on very rare occasion for short duration!

I do not make a habit of it and enjoy feeling the G force from acceleration much more so than high speed blast.

ok had my old 97 5.4 2wd about 105-110. Had my current one up to 110 on AT tires. Probably could've gone faster but caught up to traffic. I think i have tried to tap out the speedo on all my vehicles. This is why i can never have a hayabusa.

I've had my 07 EL up to 100 on I-85 in VA making time to get to NC.

Engine felt like it had a lot more to go but the governor (governator? LOL!) wouldn't let it.

Either way it was like a locomotive, lots of momentum going on but pretty stable at those speeds.

Completely agree with Gary on the stability! It's just a bit unnerving once there is a massive crosswind that throws you over half a lane... I checked my zero to sixty the other day and got 13.8, anyone with a 4.6 do better?
