Traction lok doesnt mess with turning in slippery conditions as long as you know the most basic driving skills. All of this may be out the window anyway....i hate to say it but i may be going to test drive a new grand cherokee...they are dealing pretty good on the things around here.

Thats interesting Tony. Did not realize the newer expys now only came with traction control and open differentials. Makes sense though. Sounds like it would be preferable to traction lock.

Traction lock is effective at making sure both wheels get power but this is not always good while turning in slippery conditions. Can lead to severe oversteer. (2wd)

So I disagree and stand by my statement. Unless the most basic driving skills your are mentioning is simply staying out of the throttle whenever you turn. Now decent traction in the rain and there should be no issue if driven reasonably. But again if you have a slippery intersection or snow / ice the rear can go around quickly with light throttle specially in a turn. The traction lock resist speed differential between the two wheels which makes the likelyhood the inside wheel will spin much higher. In fords case it uses a series of clutches on the spider gears that drive the axles. These clutches must slip in order for the tires to spin at different rates. (turning). This can more or less effectively lock them together if traction is poor making for an intersting ride. Yes you can get off the gas as soon as you feel it start to come around but this does not happen with an open differential. It will just spin the wheel with no traction.

This is much more apparent in a mustang with the light rearend. I have had intersections in the rain where I could give it basically no amount of throttle and had to idle it out and in the snow you could forget it. Rear would come around in a heartbeat. This was many years ago when it was still
stock.. and I ended up getting a daily driver because of this. It now runs low 10's so the rear is lively no matter what the conditions.

Well im from the midwest...im used to snow and slippery conditions. Sure when i was young and learned how to really drive I spun out twice. But havent since then and ive hard trucks with LSD's, Lockers and open rear ends. The most basic of driving skills tells you that you should take it easy in slippery conditions when turning at times I drive more aggressively that i should in my tahoe...even in snow and rain..never spun out. Not saying it WONT happen but just gotta watch it and be aware of conditions.

Hi,

What were the issues with IRS on the Expy? I agree that "old tech" locking diff is the way to go, course I'm over 50 and old tech is cheaper to fix. Problem is, any 3rd gen Expy won't
be old tech... What to do? I like the higher power and slightly better gas mileage GM 5.3 but hate the rear seat hassles. It would be so simple to decide if Ford had 340 HP and a G80 rear...

First one to come out with this system was the Lincoln navigator 2003 advance track. I oversteered on purpose and the vehicle regains control. If your front tire is in the air and your rear tire is also it will send a msg to your abs and it will stop the tires in the air and us the ones with the most traction. AND to when in 4hi or 4lo it lifts 3inches taller

It might be higher powered but the expy can tow the Tahoe backwards any day as proven by me and many other. 2004 Chevy Tahoe with the g80 vs my 99 expy with 3.73 limited slip and broke his gears :think: and they said G80 are good? Maybe once or twice in the sugar sand and they Chip there teeth from stress

+1. My old truck had limited slip and the ass end was all over the place in the snow and ice. I find the Expedition is way more stable in 2wd in the same conditions.

More weight on the a$$ end helps. :)

Ford calls theirs traction lock. Have it in both my mustang and expedition.

Ditto, both my truck and my Mustang have LSD's from the factory


And yes, i would miss it in either vehicle...





But yeah, gotta love zombie threads that come back to life...

advance track, vs g80 chevy vs limited slip

Chevy stuck with g80 and Lincoln stuck with advance track. My limited Slip didn't have a problem..... Post my video in a minute
