Hi everyone,
I'm looking to get into the Expedition and am thinking about getting a new 2014 because some of the incentives. I was wondering if anyone knew of any big changes in the new model that should have me looking at the 2015. I know it has the ecoboost and more horsepower but right now, that's not enough to make me pay almost $10,000 more. Thanks for any input, I'm new here but I really like these forums, I also belong to a couple of other ford forums and I think they're a great way for owners to help each other.

Personally, I'd rather have the 5.4L than the Ecoboost. I know I'm probably in the minority, but I like simple and reliable. For $10K the choice is pretty easy, I think!

The ecoboost is probably the biggest change. Everything else is just general updates as far as i can tell. New front end, updated interior with myford touch. I have yet to drive a 2015 myself so im really not sure which one id prefer. Very happy with my 2009 though.

I put 150k miles on my 2005 Expedition, then 48k miles in 22 months on my 2013, now have a 2015 Platinum model. Significant differences between the 2015 and previous generation. Absolutely worth the $. The power difference feels far greater than what the numbers suggest. From the headlight operation to interior controls to MyFord touch to new Nav to new Platinum model, CCD, 22" wheels, etc, etc., just a superior vehicle. The 3.5 EB has proven reliability, fewer moving parts, and better fuel economy compared to the old 5.4

Youre not alone. I very much prefer the 5.4 to the ecoboost. Sure the eco might have some more HP, but the MPG improvement is marginal at best and you cannot beat the Ford modular v8 for a gas truck. Some people prefer that smaller turbo engine, and thats fine. But I want a beefy V8 for a beefy 6000lbs truck.

Turbos are great for sports cars and diesels and IMHO thats about where they should be.

Can't beat the sound of NA V8 less problems with turbos too.

Agreed. But I wouldnt say more problems with a proper turbo setup. The only downfall I noticed with turbos and other forced induction vehicles that I owned and operated is weather. It gets HOT here and even with a nice intercooler with plenty of flow/cooling it still would get heat soaked and lower my power output. Now imagine towing in the mountains in summer on a 90F+ day...thats a high chance for heat soaking an intercooler.

Now ford may have done it right, but Im still not convinced on turbos outside of diesels and sports cars after what I have experienced.

How many miles do you have behind a 3.5 Ecoboost?

Fuel economy is +~10% over the 5.4 motor

Fortunately yes you can beat the 5.4 motor in a Ford truck, both the 5.0 and EB are superior.

Not sure I would consider a moderate size 3v 5.4 motor "beefy". The EB makes more torque at 2000 rpm than the 5.4 makes, period. The EB moves the 6000lb Expedition in a way the 5.4 could never dream of, loaded or unloaded.

The EB has racked up what? A billion miles or more miles since it's inception in F150s, it's a proven performer, hot, cold, altitude, etc..

I'm not a 5.4 hater, have racked up more than 200k fairly trouble free mile (except the broken spark plugs, etc.) but spend time in the EB and your opinion will likely change.

Thanks for everyone's input! I actually went with the 2015 after driving them both. The acceleration with the ecoboost was significantly quicker but the main reason for my descision was some of the technology updates. I have a 13' Focus ST so I have become accustomed to options like auto door unlocking, push button start and the second generation of the SYNC system. The gas mileage was also 2 mpg better which doesn't seem like much but we plan on keeping it for a long time so it will pay for itself. Another option that the 15' had was the BLIS, which will help my wife out while she's driving "Beastie". I don't know if the BLIS was available on 14's but it wasn't on the one we were looking to buy and dealers weren't looking to trade 14's because of the lack of inventory and good incentives. I also didn't love the 14' had $2000 wheel option that put 22"s on it, though they look great, bigger wheels are trouble on Michigan roads. Also on the money end, a huge savings was going to be the 0% financing for 6 years on the 14' but my credit union got me 1.9% on the 15' which I was pretty happy with. In the end, I like them both a lot but I'm happy I went with the 15'.

Im not a ecoboost hater. Merely a 5.4/ford modular superfan. Easy to work on and proven reliability. I have driven an ecoboost and sure its quicker and sure it gets 1-2 MPG more then the 5.4. But the ford modular engines have been around since the early 90s and even persist today in the 5.0 coyote...

The 5.4 has over 17 years of service as family haulers, work trucks, service vehicles and even some track cars. Thats impressive. Will the 5.0 modular have the same track record? Who knows?? Honestly Id put my money on it being just as good, but not better. But again if HP and slight MPG are your only parameters then well yeah an engine designed in the early to mid 1990s will not fair well against a late 2000s early 2010s designed engine.

Just took delivery of a 2015, because of the Eco boost. I traded a 2011 F150 with Eco boost and loved it. The only reason I traded was I am now a proud pappy with 5 grandchildren, need seats more than a truck bed, but still have to tow the trailer. I can not comment on 5.4, never had one, but I love the Eco boost! I do not believe any of you will be disappointed with the performance and mileage you get with the Eco boost.

Just got back from my first trip, 1300 miles, Indiana, Ohio , and Pennslyvannia , mostly turnpike, averaged 19.5 mpg on turnpike, 17.6 on tank around town, 18.8 for entire trip. Very satisfied and plenty of power also.

I like the instrument panel (speedo/tach) design much better in my 14 than the 15.

As always tho, just a matter of personal preference.

We had an 08 Eddie Bauer with the 5.4 and 3.31 gears. It was gutless where I live (WV) and it would downshift in a headwind. It did great on trips once out of the hills. We had a vct solenoid go out (it had a reman engine with 20,000 miles) and the dealer wouldn't warranty it. We looked to trade anyway and traded it on an Explorer Sport with an Ecoboost. It was an awesome vehicle but we quickly outgrew it and the wife missed the utility of the Expedition. So, we traded back to an Expedition. It's a 2015 Limited 4x4. I must say it is a different vehicle from the 08 in driving dynamics. I'm a MFT fan and that EB is awesome. It will hold 6th gear with ease on the same hills the 08 would be dropping gears. It gets an honest 2 mpg better also. My truck is a FX4 screw with the EB and I swear the Expedition feels quicker. I will say Ford could stand to do some modernization but we gravitated towards the Expedition. Drove a Sequoia and loved the seats and most of the interior better. But it was like driving a whale and the prices were sobering.

To give an update. Made a 200 mile round trip today. Mixed interstate and back roads with some city driving. The EB returned 19.3 mpg. I am honestly tickled pink with that coupled with the effortless power. I dont miss the 5.4.

I just completed a 400 mile trip from Indiana to Silver Lake in Michigan towing a travel trailer in my new EL. It is night and day when compared to my '04.

Yes my '04 sounds like a real truck with a cat-back Magnaflow and a cold-air intake, but arriving refreshed rather than looking for some ****** is worth the trade off.

I am just hoping that a cold air intake will give me some sensation of speed in the new one. This thing is just too quiet all around.
