I am going today to buy a 2003 Ford Expedition. I have owned a few expy's before but this one caught my eye because it was cheap, has a Rough Country leveling kit, BFG all terrain 35's, and has some options that i like.

It has 200k on it, but has 50k on a new ford motor (5.4). Ive never had a car with a 2nd motor put in. is there anything to worry about with having a new motor? i assume its a good thing but thought i'd ask someone who is mechanically inclined.

Also, the leveling kit... anyone have experience with Rough Country kits? I have always wanted to have one on my cars but never pulled the trigger. Do these effect anything? gas mileage, ride, etc.

thanks in advance for help!

Can't tell you much about the engine replacement but the leveling kit itself will not affect much (gas mileage wise) and will only really (slightly) stiffen the suspension... The thing will slightly decrease gas mileage is the Bfg 35s because normal tire size is around a 31-32 so the extra weight will will compensate by using a little more gas... I'd expect nothing less than about a 2-3 mpg decrease... (I've had a level on my previous expy and will soon have one on my 2006)

To give you my .02 I think that the motor replacement probably isn't something to be too too worried about if the previous owner had been driving on it for 50k miles with no issues so main thing I'd be interested in looking at is the common rust areas and how the transmission is acting after all those miles.

Just another .02 from what I know about rough country they are a decent company with pretty good quality parts

Thanks for the response. Checked for rust, didn't see any. It is a local upstate SC car so the climate/weather hasn't been an issue.

What are a few things I can do to check the transmission out and see some "signs" that it might be a problem.

I'm only paying 4K for it so it's not a huge deal but it'll be my only transportation and I'll be driving it 150-200 miles a week and using it to work a side job pulling small trailer on the weekends.

I would just ask to test drive it and see if the transmission slips or knocks or anything like that... You will know if it has a transmission issue once you drive it and also just make sure The previous owner kept up on the service and you'll prolly be all set [emoji106]
