Do you guys believe Mobil 1 full synthetic is a better call than the OEM grade Motorcraft oil and filter??

I bought my 2002 F-150 crew cab with the 5.4 brand new. I put 120K on it and changed my oil every 3000 miles with Motorcraft 5W-20 oil and a Motorcraft filter and had ZERO issues with that motor.

Last week I traded it in on an 05 Expedition with only 65K original miles. Service records ahowed that it had the oil changed at the Ford dealer every 4000 miles and I want to continue the trend of regular oil changes. I had planned on using Motorcraft oil and filter as I did on my F-150 but have no problem with switching to Mobil 1.

In my opinion they seem to be able the same from the amount of research I've been doing lately.
Personally (although more expensive) I'm going to go with the Mobil 1 full synthetic with synthetic filters on my 2006 from now on it already seems to have made the expy tin stronger and my buddy with a 5.0 F150 runs the same and has no issues at all

I'll give Mobil 1 a try. My wife's car is a 2012 Acura RDX that we bought new and that calls for Mobil 1 from the factory. I've been changing her oil every 4000 miles since new with Mobil 1 and at 4000 miles that oil is still very clean. So I have no issues running it in my Expedition. When I do my first oil change it will be with Mobil 1.

Honestly at 3-4000 miles between changes most oils should still look really clean. Mobil 1 extended performance says you can go 15k but most filters limit life to 7-10k between changes.

The GM dealer where I take my LS2 which requires Mobil1 says 5-6000 is fine, which for me is about a year.

My S10 4.3L was at 230,000 miles (towing and flogging) when I sold it running 10k Mobil1 and other synthetics between changes.

Again, people should do what they feel is best. I've ran all other synthetic oils when there wasn't a sale on Mobil 1 with good results so far, at 10k per change. Mobil 1 is definitely not the only game in town. It's your motor though, and if you run it that long and something fails you might blame the long interval (or me lol).

As has been mentioned, the 3000 interval comes from the older engines which were less precise and running leaded gas, among many other factors. It seems most agree the auto service industry has let that interval stand due to $.

Motor craft 5w20 is a group3 base oil. Still good oil. Try it and test it to see how it works for you.

I always considered Mobil 1 to be a step above the competition, but seems I bought into the hype like many others. This guy performed independent testing and found Mobil 1 to be one of the poorer performing synthetics. In fact, it was even outperformed by Mobil's own synthetic blend. The clear winner by a mile in his testing was Royal Purple. All of that said most who have performed their own testing would agree that timely, regular oil changes are far more important than the type/brand of oil you use.

Anecdotally, I've put between 230-360K miles on the last 4 vehicles I have owned and never had a motor go on me. I always just used whatever oil was on special at the time (Pennzoil, Castrol, Mobil, etc.) and changed it every 4-6K miles. Of course I wasn't dealing with a POS like the 5.4L Triton.

A buddy of mine swears by royal purple as well.. Says it's the greatest thing since sliced bread, if I wasn't about to buy Mobil for some reason I would for sure go with Royal purp

For me, I have been running Royal Purple in my Expy since I bought it a couple years ago, and generally it has been good. I switched over at the advice of a good buddy, who too swears by it. He has an old SL2 and those things burn oil like it's a quarter a barrel, and until very recently his didn't burn any of the RP. Only complaint is that even with RP, it does use a quart or more on long trips, but it seems to be somewhat common of a thing with this motor I've read.

Since virtually everything else in my house (except my motorcycle) takes Mobil 1, I will be switching to M1 this upcoming oil change to see how it does. Also it means being able to buy in bulk xD

I use Royal Purple oil and filter in the worked 502 big block in my 68 Chevelle. I have about $10K into that motor so I don't cheap out with oil. It's fantastic oil.

As for my Expedition, I'll switch to Mobil 1 and use a Mobil 1 filter. I'm 48 years old and I'm hoping to make my 05 Expedition the last truck I ever own.

RP is a group IV and V. If you have a very old leaking engine might not be a good idea. It will definitely help clean your engine.

Good point.

To GM468, Your 502 sounds like a newer crate motor but I've read and discussed with people about zddp needed for older motors. You may want to look into it for yours since many modern oils don't have as much zddp in them and can cause premature wear. If I remember correctly, solid lifter motors need more zddp.

I been thinking of going with royal purple for my next oil change, I use to use it along time ago but it was stupid expensive back then, prices now are more competitive than how it use to be double the price of Mobil 1

My 502 is a GM crate motor but it runs a hydraulic roller cam and the ZDDP is only really an issue with old school flat tappet cams. I wanted to go with a roller cam to be able to run some aggressive lift and duration numbers on my cam and I didn't trust a flat tappet with how radical I wanted to go.

I specifically ordered a crate shortblock with the roller cam and then had it torn down and blueprinted by a well known performance machinist in my area. Not only did I remove and replace the GM cam, but I also went with a set of custom ported AFR aluminum cylinder heads that help the motor push out just over 600HP. The engine builder recommended Royal Purple oil and filter. I've had this motor in my car now for 2 years and it has great oil pressure and doesn't leak a drop of oil. Ha ha it better for what I have into it!

I was using the Motorcraft Synblend 5/20 until about 9 months ago. I switched to Amsoil full syn 2/30 it is more expensive but the oil change intervals are not as frequent. Just from my observation of MY truck (250k miles) I noticed a bit better gas mileage and the truck is felling freer (if that makes sense) I drive about 4k miles on my truck a month and have have had a more oil changes with the Amsoil and it feels like my truck has liven up more and more (and it ran great before)

Side Note: I had a lot of Cam Phaser noise I changed out the VVT Solenoid and that REALLY quieted the phaser noise.

RP has a much higher quality base oil in my opinion. Same goes with Amsoil.

In my opinion even running a flat tappet motor using a good oil is better than trying to add zinc (zddp).

Amsoil signature series flows better than RP on cold starts.

I may give either Amsoil or Royal Purple a try at the time of my next change although so far the Mobil 1 is feeling great!
I will say though that I will never be putting conventional oil in the Expy ever again that stuff burns like sawdust.
