Hey everyone,

I own a 98 expedition 5.4L. As of about 3 months ago there has been a rubbing/shuddering noise in the rear end when I am turning from a stop. Doing research it would seem that it is not the correct differential fluid in the rear end. Upon going to look, I noticed that that the rear axle seal was shot so I replaced it. HERES THE FUN PART!!! I found these little coin-like things and CAN NOT for the life of me figure out what they are or what they go to. I have asked the dealership and parts store and they have all been stumped. Can somebody help me identify what these things are, ANY HELP IS GREATLY APPRECIATED

Wow

I have to say I think you are very lucky if your differential is still working.

On my differential I have ID cards attached by wire ties externally.

8 = year, so 1918, 1928, 1938..... 1988, 1998
G= July. (A = Jan, B = Feb, C = Mar, etc.)
21 = day of month.

Your rear end was built July, 21 1998. It was a Tuesday. Astronaut Alan Shepard died. 28,718 filled the Astrodome to watch the Colo Rockies beat the Astros 5-0. Phish played the Desert Sky Pavilion in Phoenix and Metallica rocked Hartford at the Meadows. Mega Millions didn't have a winner holding numbers 3, 7, 8, 11, 20 and Mega Ball 25. Ken Starr and Monica Lewinski were in court for news leaks allegations. Michigan was surprised by a severe storm that killed a few and injured many. Nationally gas averaged $1.06/gal.

So these are ID cards? where should i be looking for where these came from? Also, the shuddering/vibrating/rubbing noise is still there, any idea if these would have anything to do with it?

Mine were on the bolts that hold the cover on. Do you know if you have limited slip rear end? If so did you put the modifier in when put new fluid in?

To give you an idea on where exactly that tag should've been mounted at [2005 expedition for reference]

They actually appear to have machined surfaces and cast surfaces, I would really look at the rear end gears, this looks like part of the gear teeth train...that would account for your noise where these pieces are missing.

Maybe someone at the factory was pissed off that day and put them in the Diff. I had a friend said he had a sound coming from inside the drivers door. Turns out it was a washer hanging from a wire.
