Don’t let your passenger put their feet on the dash. Unless you have an extra $2500 laying around!!

When I bought this rig a quarter of the seam where the airbag comes out of the passenger side was split. Turns out the airbag cover is not a single piece. The ENTIRE dash pad has to be replaced!!!
$1,200 for the dash pad, $1,300 in labor and they need the rig for 2 days!!!!!
Goodnight, glad I don’t have to pay for it.

So word to the wise don’t let folks put their feet on the dash because it could cost you. Not to mention what could happen to them if you were in a wreck.

Granted I am not paying to have it fixed as it was a stipulation of my purchase that it be fixed.
So how would you suggest fixing it and not paying

I don't let anyone put their feet on my dashboard or out the window. I find it disgusting & low class

I am old and married now so I don’t either but when I was in High School and College there was certainly nothing disgusting or low class about girls golden legs all propped up on the dash of my Mustangs.
The 1992 wasn’t a a deal as it had no airbag and was hard black plastic. The 1996 has an airbag was a bit concave and softer with saddle interior so I just asked them to take their shoes off.

Somebody is pulling somebodys leg here.

The dealer list price for a 2016 Expedition front passenger airbag is like $600. Taska will sell you one for $402. I've not changed an Expedition airbag but have a F150 (very similar dash) and taking your time its an hour or two for a novice. The dashboard stays put. The bright silver HVAC trim on either side pops off, the glovebox drops down, couple of bolts, a wiring harness or two and she is out. No special tools, no special equipment.

The rollover curtain airbags are the expensive ones, and they are under a grand.

AL1Z-15044A74-AD is an example part number. Last two characters vary depending on interior color, AD = Dune.

The airbag itself is not the issue.

The dash pad is the part that is damaged.
https://goo.gl/images/Vcsus7

In the picture the line between the vents where the airbag deploys from is split.
According to the Ford Dealer that airbag cover portion is one piece to include all of the black portion of the top dash pad.

One would think the rectangular area above the glovebox where the airbag is housed would be an interchangeable part in and of itself. Apparently it is not and the entire top dash pad is one large piece.
I’ll check if there is a part number on my work order when I get to the house.

My 08 had that airbag deploy when I hit a deer (my avatar) plus the drivers side one too

It was nothing like $2500, they would have totaled the vehicle if so. I think it was about $500 on the invoice I saw.

The whole job was about $7k it was real close to being totaled but they were able to save it

The real money was that they had to replace the air bag control module and front seat belts and sensors (per Ford spec, any time an airbag goes off they are required to replace that stuff)

Maybe the 2016 is different but that dash looks like mine.

I worked for Ford in experimental vehicle build, we would swap airbags out all the time but that was years ago

According to the work order the part being replaced is Part #: FL1Z-7804320-BC
1,286.30
Labor $1,125
Shop Supplies $35
Tax $79.28

For a grand total of $2,525.58

One would presume that just the cover would be it’s own piece since an airbag deployment is not really out of the question. And replacing the entire dash seems a bit ludicrous. But so does a lot of the engineering we run across in the automotive world.
I specifically asked about the airbag cover being it’s own piece. The service manager assured me the whole pad was one piece and it had to be replaced.
Hopefully the part will come in this week so it can be fixed.
I am going to ask for the old dash to use to build my boys a little derby car. It would be kind of fun to have a real dash pad for it.

This sounds like utter horse pucky. The dash shell is indeed one piece but it does not include the airbag or airbag cover. The attached diagram shows how it's laid out. They list only two part #s for the dash shell (w/ and w/o 8-inch display). I'm guessing they all come with an Ebony top regardless of interior color.

I know there's two different versions of the dash top though as 2015-17 trucks that *don't* come with Premium Sound have a molded-in tray top center while trucks *with* Premium Sound have a separate center channel speaker cut into that tray.

Well this will be interesting according to the diagram you posted #9 appears to be a completely separate cover which I specifically asked about when I was told the whole dash pad had to be replaced.
Do you have the full diagram that lists #9 and the part number????

Also is the whole dashpad different between premium and no premium sound or does the organizer tray (I have) and the center speaker just use the same clip location and fit the opening?

Sure is going to be interesting when the part come in. I have been waiting 2 weeks for the part and am going to be pissed if they ordered wrong and actually need #9 and have to wait for it arrive.

I have been trying to tell you its separate. I used to work at Ford Motor Company building prototype vehicles for 13 years. 5 of those years I prepped cars for the crash barrier.

The airbags have always been a separate assembly. Just like in the diagram

I could see it being 2 hours labor, what they are charging you is insane

It appears that in 2015 they have stopped using a separate cover for the airbag from the rest of the dash pad.

If you search for #9 and have your Expedition listed as a 2016 there is no indication of part #9 except in the diagram.

If you search for #9 and have your Expedition listed as a 2014 you then have 3 options for #9
Charcoal, Stone, Camel.
Part# 7L1Z-7804338-CC

If you directly search for #9 part number with 2016 listed as your year it states it does not fit.

If you directly search for #6 the with 2014 listed the part does not fit.

The large dash panel part number is also different by the first digit.
2014 starts with 7 and 2016 starts with F

So I guess we will find out for sure when the part arrives.

Depends how hot the woman is! I don't know about you guys, but if I've got a gorgeous 5'10 brunette sitting along side me, and she wants to take her shoes off, to air out those beautiful size 9 feet on a hot day, I don't think I'd say no! Not if I want to get lucky later. Now the wife, well that's another story. Probably don't want to get lucky there, so politely say honey, your feet there is gonna cost us $2 grand!

Brian, this is completely off-topic but that sounds like it was one heck of an interesting job! You must have some stories about that one...

I suppose they could be right but would really be surprised if that is the case

Yeah Eddie it was a great job until they closed the dept and sent all the work to Rousch. I was offered a job there but I refuse to work for them (long story)

I have TONS of stories of my time there. Most people have no idea how much goes into developing and testing vehicles

So much for that theory (see attached).

Of course, I could be wrong. I don't claim to be a Ford parts expert. It just makes *no* sense whatsoever for Ford to integrate the passenger side airbag cover into the dash pad. These airbags have always been separate modules. Making a customer replace the entire dash just because an airbag deployed would royally piss off so many owners that Ford would have a PR nightmare on their hands. (And, if this turns out to be true, they deserve it -- plus a class-action lawsuit!)

In the distant past, I believe (IIRC) that the cover may have been a separate part in some vehicles. In that case, the dashboards would've had a door that opened when the bag inflated. But, as far as I know, today nearly every vehicle has the cover integrated into the airbag assembly.

The reason you couldn't find the passenger airbag part numbers listed in the first diagram is because Ford has changed the parts catalog organization for 2015-17. Instead of listing the airbag in the Instrument Panel section, it is now under Electrical=>Airbag Components. That makes it a bit more confusing to find some stuff, but that's what they did. . .

The 2014 has the separate cover panel.

Don’t get it twisted I agree with you all that there is no way one should have to replace the whole dash.
I have brought it up with the service manager and parts guy on multiple occasions.
They are adiment this is the case. I have given the part number they provided me and the full cost break down.
This is straight from the Ford Service Manager they even double checked after I questioned it.

So I guess we’ll know for sure next Wednesday. My appointment is Tuesday but say they need it for 2 days.
I have also requested to keep the old part so we’ll have a better idea on construction.

The cost I really don’t care as I am not paying for it.
I will be pissed if I drop it off and once they get it all torn down realize their mistake even after I questioned it in the first place.
Then they don’t have the part they have to put it back together and I have to bring it back and jack with my schedule again.
