I know I know, the same old gripe. I'm not expecting 30mpg or something, but I'd like close to what Ford says.

So I've got a 2010 Expedition EL Limited (2wd) and my mpg is all over the place. I'm not truly concerned about city milage (but an incrrase would be nice, but I already get 14-15), but my highway just drops.

Driving 60-70, I get 17mpg (display says 18.2)
Driving 75-80, display says 16.4 (idk actual, kind of scared to figure it out).

Ford says I should be getting 20, so it would be nice to get closer to that.

I drive very conservatively, so it's not my driving style, and my tires are stock size (though aggressive all terrains), and fully inflated.

I'm not sure if the plugs and injectors have been replaced (111k miles), so I'll be doing that soon. But if it runs well as is, could they drain mpg without showing an issue?

Side note, I want to replace the air filter, but that damn little electric plug won't unclip, and I don't want to break it. Tips?

Well to get good mileage the vehicle has to be in good tune i.e plugs, boots, air filter, fuel filter, clean oil and filter. A 2011 will have a lifetime fuel filter so check that one off the list.

Where is the fuel filter located? Basically a tune up is my best chance to squeak out an extra mpg or 2?

What do you get for highway?

Yours is in the tank so no need to change until the fuel pump goes out. 07-09 has an external fuel filter you can change but that stopped in 2010 (complete and utter stupidity on fords part) but that today’s money grab designs. I get 18 highway but mines a 4x4. Id change out the air filter and do plugs if they’ve never been done.

Figures lol. Well, my only issue with the air filter is that stupid plug is on the verge of breaking. Any tips on how to get that off? Do you use a stock air filter or something else?

75-80mph is probably above the tested speed when they got those results. Bring it down to 60mph and I'll bet it improves.

Keep an eye on the RPM gauge, the lowest you keep your RPM but still able to maintain speed is the money spot

Unfortunately 75-80 is the slow lane here. 65-70 and you're a snail. Like I said, I understand that speed has a factor In it, but I shouldnt be getting 14mpg doing 75. As far as RPM, I never go above 2100.

No need to unplug the "stupid" plug. Just loosen the 8mm hose clamp and pop the 3 clips. The entire air filter top assembly can just sit on top of the engine. Plenty of room to access the filter and there is adequate slack in the MAF wire harness.

What make/model of aggressive all-terrain tires do you have? They are often much heavier than typical 2WD all season tires, so expect a MPG drop. Thats just the way it is.

Plugs were due at 100K. Injectors aren't a mileage/interval replacement item.

I'm with the others do the tune up. A tune item that's not at 100 percent is not burning your fuel efficient. The tires will definitely fight the aerodynamic of your vehicle. Down in Alabama, how much snow or mud do you really get? Switching over to a quality Street tire and keeping pressure at factory spec, and your alignment spot on you'll improve. Anything above 65 mph will make mileage drop, even in overdrive. Be happy your getting 14 plus in town.

Oops, meant coil packs. BFs, they're pretty knobby. They were on it when I bought the truck, and they're pretty new.

How much of a ***** is it to get to the back plugs to do it myself? And can I clean the MaF without taking it off?

I cleaned mine just by turning over air filter tube. Use the right Maf spray though. The rears are tough, but doable. Our guys here do them all the time.

Well, I cleaned the MaF (more or less drenched it), and the airfilter was pristine... Guess it's plugs time. After that, if nothing changes, I guess I'm stuck with 17mpg

Your MPGs are good

"Highway" MPGs from ratings are straight-line, flat, good tarmac, and ***55 mph***

Plugs are easy

Taking maf off takes a whopping 2 minutes, and you should probably remove all those intake plastics and wipe or wash the inside while you're at it

How'd you like 10 mpg city, 15 highway like mine. Your mileage is great for a 3 ton rolling brick. My 5.0 mustangs only got 13-15 mpg, and the two Lincoln's even less.

According to the onboard, my 2017 is averaging 14.7 mpg. Not a great improvement over our Chevy I was hoping for more, but it sure beats 12mpg.

Everybody's driving habits are different so it will vary quite a bit. Just like brakes and tires, one guy gets 50k on his tires, another guy is more aggressive doesn't rotate, etc drives hard, gets half that.

In my 2011 Limited I got maybe 14 on the highway, 11 city. Now I get 18 on the highway and never lower than 16 around town.

If I ever got 17 with my '11 I woulda been very happy.

But, considering my '17 has way more power than the '11, and considering I'm getting much better gas mileage, I'd say the federal regulations requiring higher mpg were a darn good idea.

Pretty amazing what kind of power you can squeak out of a 6 cylinder. Last 6 cylinder that kicked butt was the 53 Hudson hornet. 210 horsepower with 2 carb setup and hotter cam. Competed with 8 cylinders on the racetrack, and actually beat most of them. Wonder how that tank would have ran with twin turbos like the 4 th gen 3.5 does. Probably 350 horses, but turbos weren't even around, but blowers were!
