I posted this before, but hope to see if anyone else has this problem. When stopped, my 2018 XLT's rear hatch intermittently goes down when up or up when it is down. Warning chime does not sound. No set pattern when it happens so impossible to duplicate. It has hit me and several other people. Has been to dealer twice. This has been reported to Ford and I have a case number. If it happens again, I plan to begin asking Ford for a new vehicle. Any comments would be appreciated.

Mine has been problematic, but nowhere near that bad. A couple times it has closed on me while standing and unloading groceries or when kneeling behind and snapping the hitch cover back on, but it does sound the alert. Then, when you need it to work (open/close), it won't. I gave up on trying to activate it with my foot. It is poorly engineered on 4th gen. Expeditions but it works like a charm on my sister's Escape.

Please don't be insulted by my reply. I have experienced times when the remote in my jacket pocket gets an unintended button push. Not suggesting that's your issue, just the first thing that came to mind when I saw you post. I sure hope it's not a systemic problem that has yet to be openly identified.

Maybe it is good I don't have the automatic rear hatch option...

There was a member on the Explorer forum that their power lift gate open randomly, even while their car was parked several blocks away!

I'll try and find the thread now.

our new to us 2012 edge was doing this a week after we bought it last month....i replaced the lift struts (hold open struts) and it stopped doing it. not sure if it was not locking right or what. but at full open it would go past the high point, then drop a few inches and bam it would start the closing event
i know your vehicle is new, might be worth complaining to see if they change struts if it goes away.

I will be watching this thread with interest because our
almost-new (33k mi.) 2018 has this disconcerting
habit also. With absolutely no reason or warning the
hatch will pop open when you don't want or worse,
close while you're getting something out!

Not only that but the car locks/unlocks randomly
while washing it! Just the water stream striking
the doors or windows sends the locking mechanism
into a frenzy, even including extending the running
boards and retracting them.

Glad we bought the extended, bumper-to-bumper
on this one! (Well, assuming it can be fixed...)
