Josh over at 5 star tuning has it all dialed in.

5 star tuning 93 perf only, 5th revision
0-80 boost launch 4hi, TC off, AdvanceTrac off

Topped out at 21.46psi of boost with +1.50 degrees of knock. Almost 2 seconds quicker 0-60 over stock, low 400s hp and 450 tq TO THE WHEEL over the dynoed 306hp and 340tq on stock tune. Keep in mind, it’s an EL, lifted, on 35s. ~7000 curb weight. Right after this video was recorded, I did another pull against a Dodge Charger 392. Boost launched again and pulled away with ease. Granted, they would’ve eventually passed me but the 1/4 mile or so we went I was out in front thanks to boost launch and 4hi. All they did was roast tires lol

I have been thinking about getting a tune for mine too. Do you have any ideas about how the 87 or 89 perf tunes from 5star run?

I don't know if I'm ready to commit to running 93 at the 13-15 mpg I am getting right now.

So I did the numbers and when the wife is driving not me, her Expy gained 1.5/2.0 MPG running 93 vs 87, both tuned with the respective 87 & 93 Tune from HyperTech. The increase makes up for the difference in cost, and makes a difference of about 25-30 HP on most Tuners.

I am working with Adam from ZFGRacing for doing a custom tune using HPTuners.

I think I'll start bothering the guys at 5 star and see what input they have too. Thanks!

Also, its surprising how many RVA people are on here...we should have a meet up for beers or something

Some fuzzy math if you're referring to fuel use. The power is there but I doubt your (or my) wife needs it. :)

In Richmond today BP 87 is $2.53 and 93 is always 60¢ more.

Pretending the truck gets 16 mpg on 87 and 18 mpg on 93 the cost for a mere 1000 miles using the more expensive 93 is $174 and $158 with 87. At 500 miles/week that translates in meaningful terms to about a 6-pack of cheap beer a week. Did someone say beer?

At the only 1.5 mpg benefit the numbers are $179 for 93 and the same $158 for 87. $21 will buy two six packs of better beer every two weeks.

I've seen similar numbers just putting 93 in the tank and letting the ECU handle it. More power and increased fuel economy. A specialized tune isn't needed to increase the power. The increased cost is only justified if you need/want the extra power. Or my favorite reason: Just 'cuz!

If the increase in fuel economy balanced out the price increase I'd be uing 93.

Premium here in PA isn’t $0.60 per gallon higher. More like $0.45 per gallon.

That being said, it still doesn’t justify the mpg increase. It’s just plain more money. But I do it cause when I have to pass or jump on the interstate or make a turn onto a main road at a blind curve...I want as much acceleration as I can get. I don’t use premium because of the mpg increase.

Well Chuck, Your Station in Southside is bending you over for Premium.

Yes, my wife definitely notices the power difference. Her daily driver before the Expy was a lifted F250 Diesel on 35’s that ran a tune called Looney! She can definitely appreciate the power. I trained her right!!!

Using today’s prices from the Kroger where I get fuel, right now it is maintaining a 40c difference. When I did the testing it was running a 35c difference between 87 and 93.

87
$2.65, 16MPG, 1000 miles $165.25

93
$3.05, 18MPG, 1000 miles $169.44

$4.19 difference over a 1000 miles, and about 30HP difference. Sorry, but that is a no brainer!

While stock our motors can use the additional Octane, putting a tune on it makes a big additional difference!

35¢/gallon difference does indeed make this a no-brainer with that increase in fuel economy. 60¢/gallon premium is what I see here in Chesterfield at every gas station on good ole Hull Street Road where I tend to buy gas. To my surprise that delta has been constant regardless of the price of 87. When 87 octane dipped below $2.00 93 octane was $2.60. My S2000 requires at least 91 so I'm painfully aware of the price difference even with that small fuel tank.
