Can the rear windows in an EL go all the way down?

Since the rear doors in the EL aren't curved to match the wheel wells, is there any way to allow the back windows to roll all the way down the way the fronts do?

There is a law on the books about how much a rear window can open on certain classes of vehicles. That is what I was told many years ago by a glass shop owner that I used to work for.

I know my 2006 F250 the rears would go all the way down, but that was a different class of vehicle.

Maybe it is just a space issue and the EL uses the same window assembly as the regular wheel base, for cost purposes.

I have an 05 Honda Pilot and the rears go all the way down so was hoping to do the same my new to me expedition!

I've heard of it being a law/regulation as well. Doesn't mean it cant physically be done though. Lots of aftermarket parts/modifications are technically against one regulation or another be it local or federal.

I know some vehicles used to add some sort of "spacer" or "block" at the bottom of the track to prevent the window from going all the way down. Was hoping the setup in the Expedition might be similar.

Been looking for it, can’t find it quickly. Lots of discussion about Automatic Reversing. Work is getting in the way of my searches.

Very possible the old guy was wrong. Never looked it up personally.

Dark days are coming, mark my words. It always starts with the little things and quickly goes downhill from there.

Well you guys are all wrong. The reason the windows only go 1/2 to 3/4 ways down is because on certain vehicles they can't go any further or they would hit the wheel arch. Basically it's an Automotive door design. When I was growing up, our old 1953 Pontiac wagon had the same thing on the middle seat and rear sliding windows. I always thought it was to keep curious little ones from jumping out! Remember we had no seat belts, so jumping around the car while rolling was common. Maybe the part of kids staying in the car was a bonus.

This is correct on most vehicles. Except the Expedition EL rear doors are square and end in front of the wheel arch. Which is why I asked if it was possible to get them to go all the way down! Without tearing into the door it seems like it should physically be possible.

Theirs a stop in there that maybe can be removed or modified. The panels are pretty easy to take apart and check the one side. Anything's possible. Look at the bright side, the back windows at least go down 3/4 of the way. I've owned some cars that went down a 1/2. Not much help on a hot day with no AC! Let us know what you dig up?

i love this
NO there is not room inside the door to go all the way down like up front. there is to much "stuff" in there. I suppose you could do some modifications but the end would not justify the means IMO

we never open ours ...dog prefers the a/c :dogpile:

but this reminds me of a rumor back in early 2000's about dodge and their crew cab doors...some one kept insisting there was a lawsuit with ford and that dodge was prohibited from building a crew cab with larger more square doors and more room. it grew legs and i was surprised wiki didnt post it as fact... you now because at the time ford owned a huge part of cummins. crazy crap right there.

My EL doors are the same setup as my old standard length inside. It’s the same door panel shape with a little bit “added on” to fit the square door. So no there’s no extra room compared to a shorter expedition, same interior door space area.

Well I haven't tried digging around at all inside. But from the outside the visual difference between the regular length and the EL sure seems like it might be possible.

Gesh! I had no idea the 2nd row windows didn't open completely. My 05 suburban opens all the way, but it doesn't have the fancy 3rd row vent windows like the Expy does. I dont think it's any sort of law mandating on rear windows. My 03 Malibu doesn't open completely but yet the 16 cruise work car does, and all 4 are auto down.

Knowing Ford they probably use the same window assembly in both models which is why it doesn't go down all the way. I was searching on this same topic and could find nothing except for one guy cannibalized the rails from the rear doors of an F-150 and put them fit into his Expedition.

Ah well that would imply its not as easy as just removing the block/spacer that I imagined was in there!
