Back then, "easy" was because they needed to be fixed a lot. There is nothing more enjoyable than burying a high failure rate part inside a body panel cavity. For instance, I had a late 80s Bronco with the electric rear window. Of course, the motor for it died. And there was no way to replace it without cutting metal on the interior side.It's never that easy.
Hasn't been easy with cars since the '70's.
