Every fourth gen I have come across with over 10k on the odometer sounds exactly like that. My 2018 sounded identical. Kept the finest synthetic every changed every 5k. The new one doesn’t but it only has 500 miles

The one you’re about to trade had a cam phaser issue and made all that racket upon each startup??

Stretched timing chain. I had a 2013 F-150 that did exactly that. Mine was fixed under powertrain warranty. Barely got it in under the five years.

My 2018 has 15K miles and sounds just like the day I bought it with 0 miles (well 16 or something miles). I've only changed the oil once at 10K miles and used Mobil 1 Synthetic.

Yes, so do both of my friends 2018s. So do the used ones we looked at for me (I’m about to get a used XLT for work) they all had valve noise upon start up.

That’s crazy. And you’re getting a new one anyway... so is this issue an inevitability or if you haven’t had it happen, by let’s say 20k miles, you should be ok?

we already got the new one! but no it didnt effect my decision. its a little bit of valve noise before the vvt kicks in. i dont think its the end of the world. annoying, yes, detrimental......not sure???? there are lots of these trucks with 200,000-300,000 miles on them.

now that we are discussing it, sure would love to get a professionals opinion as to what it is and what the risks are.

I’ve heard this is actually normal just today. Raptors do it, 2018+ f150 3.5L and 3.5L HOs do it, 4th gens expeditions do it.

I came across this today. If you google SSM 48168 you’ll see it discussed on the raptor forums. Apparently they said some of the cam phasers on vehicles built before April 2019 could have issues and there is an updated part.

I’m probably going to take mine in in the next month or so when I get some time.

So it's not a defect but rather a "feature"? ;)
There’s plenty of ppl taking their f150s in for exact same reason and are being told it is normal, just learned this the other day.

Cheaper to say it’s not an issue/ normal than to fix. Ford has a tsb for the 5.4 Triton that says something along the lines of “Occasional knocking noises due to camphaser gears are normal and should not be cause for concern” stating it is just normal wear on the pin internally and no damage will result.....thing is if you let it go too long yes you should be concerned. Because if that phaser comes apart the engine will jump time. While it may not be an immediate emergency it’s still an issue, and on a new vehicle concerning to say the least.

This guy has no idea what he is talking about!!

While he didn't get the terminology correct, the main point of the video is that his new ride sat in the shop for over 50 days and he lemon-lawed it. Obviously a disappointing experience I'm sure.

What oil filter are you using? A cheap one, without the anti-drain back, will dry start the engine.
