Extended Warranties/Ford Regular Warranty

I am looking at used Expys and have narrowed down to the following

2001-2002
Eddie Bauer
25k-50 miles
Red, Sage, or blue

I am looking warranties...some of them have maybe a couple or several months left on the original warranty, or several miles...some of them have no more Ford Warranty...

So I am considering getting an aftermarket warranty...right now a warranty that would cover bumper to bumper to 100k miles or 5 years seems to be around 1500-1600...does that seem reasonable?

What are your experiences with extended warranties? Suggestions?

Are there any clear front runners in which company to go with?

Thanks for any feedback.

I would be careful what they set your deductibles at. A lot of them seem to want to set it at either $250 or $500. $250 is debatable but if you have to pay for anything up $500 the warranty is useless. I have seen a lot of car dealers gloss over this in the fine print.

I recently purchased a 99 Expy 4.6L. I actually purchased it at a Toyota dealer and took the Toyota extended warranty.
The warranty covers almost everything on the vehicle with a $50.00 deductible. I paid $2K for the warranty and have not regretted it since the car has had over $2000 worth of repair thus far (and I have to bring it in next week for steering problems)

I am sure to stir things up on this....

But I am convinced that the extended warrenties are a waste of money..at least for me. I am on my second truck with one, and have never used them. Yes, I see all the reports of people who have had problems, but I have never had an issue that required that I used the warranty.

The first truck, which I bought new, I had towed away by Goodwill with 250k on it. The extended warranty was never used, as it ran out before I had any real repairs to do.

My present Exby I bought used, and purchased the extended warranty. But here is the rub. Read the warranty carefully, and find out where you have to take your car to get it fixed. Since (in this case) Ford will not be the issuer of the extended policies (generally provided by a thrid party), you will not be able to take it to Ford for repair. My lovely policy, states that where I live, I have to take mine to Pep Boys....I don't think so. It is very restrictive.

Now, if there are some large $ items that fail, I guess I will, but again, nothing has happened on my Exby yet to warrant it, and it has 89k on it. I have a 5 year, 100k warranty. The only reason I know the restriction on where to take it is that I had the classic rear wiper problem, and I wanted to take it to Ford to fix...... Well, I fixed it myself, as I am not going to let some young kid at a Pep Boys muck it up (maybe I have the wrong impression...).

So, to make a long story longer, check around for your extended warranties. Had I done so, I would have found out my favorite car mechanic shop sells them, which would have been ideal, that is, if I ever have to use it!

When I bought my '98 with 32K miles on it back in 2000 I paid $2000 for an extended warranty good for 100K miles/4yrs.
Well, 100K miles came and went and I never used it for ANYTHING. Course, at 104K miles the air suspension crapped out!
It's a roll of the dice...I just traded the '98 in for a '03 with 17K miles on it. I went with 75K mile/3 yrs this time as it was about $500 cheaper.

NOTE: One big change in this warranty (direct from Ford) is that if I don't use it I get a full refund when it expires. I will be thinking twice before using it for anything minor in the next 3 years.

I would buy the warranty from ford. Dont bother calling a dealer. Call their 800 number for ESP. I dont know it off hand. But, they offer good prices and you do not have to deal with approvals .

For any who have used the regular Ford warranty to get things fixed, did you find it a hassle or they were excessively slow in fixing the problem?

Most warranties can also be cancelled and a large portion refunded if you change your mind later on.

I agree with rwinch on the extended waranty issue. My experience with them hasn't been good. A few years ago I purchased one for a new vehicle and the issuer went out of business before we could ever use it, taking my money with them!

Another thing you have to consider when buying a aftermarket warranty is getting someone to honor it. Aftermarket warranty providers have a tendency to be really slow in paying the dealership for a repair. Under most instances you will have to pay for the repair out of your own pocket and then get your money back from your provider. It's usally up to the dealership doing the repair whether they will accept the warranty or not. If you are going to buy a warranty I would recommend a Ford warranty.

I would buy a vehicle that will allow to get Ford's extended warranty. As long as the vehicle is within the 3/36000 you will be eligible. You can purchase off the web Extended Warranty,

ESP have two options for purchase, you can pay over a total of 17 months, or pay the full amount through your credit card, etc... If you pay the full amount up front it will be a cheaper.

Use Ford's ESP, they're not going anywhere.

Extended Warranty

First and Foremost...
Aftermarket warranties are just that...aftermarket. You really have to read the FINE print on what they cover. Good example...had a guy in the shop needing an intake gasket on a 2000 Windstar. Warranty Company did not cover the GASKET or labor to change it. Owners expense. ($1000). Had they taken Ford ESP there would not be a problem.
Dealerships today push people into Extended Warranties through third party companies and fail to mention the factory warranties available because they get a kick back from the other company for each policy they sell.
Lets dispel the rumor about money back for unused ESP from Ford. Ford's ESP will be prorated from DAY 1 you buy the vehicle regardless of the 3/36 originally offered. You see, you get certain Benefits not available to the normal warranty claimants so they can and will prorate the ESP if you "cash out" from progarm before you use it. Fine print.
Last, do your research. There are a couple of companies out there on the web that give comparable rates that you can use as a bargaining chip when and if you decide to purchase an ESP. I am a firm believer in a little competition. Check them out and good luck.

Extended Warrenties

I tried to shop around so that I could get the best price on the internet and found a website that rates warranties. It's at Http://www.extended-warranty.info/carwarranty/. It's a pretty good site and has a lot of useful info. The unfortunate part of the deal is that if you live in California you can not purchase a warranty on the internet because of the laws here. You can get one from your insurance company, but mine only insured new cars, so my only optiion was with Ford and they knew it. Ended up paying 2k for the 36/3 and they wouldn't come down much. Good luck! I purchased the warranty because this is my first car with 4WD. I got a 2001 E/B with 36K on it. After doing the mini-van thing the family really enjoys the expy.

I bought my aftermarket warranty thru Ford. So far it has covered a few items for me. It has a $100. deductable. The only part I don't like....is the labor rate that the Warranty company paid was less than my local ford dealer. So there was another $100 difference in the price of the repair. My ABS system failed and my keypad never worked. Both were covered.

I bought my 2000 EB expedition used with 14k miles in 2001. I got it at a chevy dealership as it was probably traded in for a burban or something. I Paid 27k for it which IMO was a great deal compared to 36k new. I wanted to protect my investment by getting an extended warranty. The guy said 1500 for a 5 year 75k warranty. At this point i said id think it over when i came back to sign the papers the next day. ( the finance guy was out that day or else i woulda got the full court press im sure.) I looked around the web and found a couple better deals so the next day i told them id pay 1200 and have a 100 deductable, they reluctantly agreed. This warranty starts apparently from the date the vehicle was originally purchased (nov. 2000) so basically it was a 2 year 39k mile extended warranty which i was ok with. This warranty was GM warranty so i wasnt afraid theyd go out of business or anything. I havent needed it but it only has 32k miles on it now. I havent had any problems and the guy said id get a fulll refund if i didnt use it, but i havent found out for sure. The warranty will end in Nov. 2005 so ill find out before then i guess.

iF YOU HAVE TO REPLACE THE ENGINE, TRANNY OR TRANSFER CASE WHAT YOU PAID FOR THE EXTENDED WARRANTY WILL SEEM LIKE SMALL POTATOES. JUST MAKE SURE YOU GET A LOOK AT THE POLICY BEFORE YOU MAKE THE PURCHASE. THE COLORFUL PAMPHLET THE DEALER SHOWS YOU WON'T TELL YOU MUCH, ASK TO SEE A FULL DISCLOSURE POLICY STATEMENT. WATCH OUT FOR WHAT THEY WON'T COVER AND DON'T TAKE ANYTHING OVER A $100.00 DEDUCTABLE. SHOULD RUN AROUND $1500.00 ANY HIGHER IS A RIP-OFF
