Good morning All

Just Recently bought 09 limited, very clean, rust free (very unusual here in Michigan).. After detail inspection of carfax found out car spent most of its years in Georgia and Florida...

OK so perfect day here in Michigan and getting ready for a wash and wax. After Inspecting roof I found that both channels on roof (one on each side running front to back) have cracked paint. Seems to only be in channels, top of roof seems fine.. Paint is actually also peeling where roof rack Attaches to roof.

Any ideas as to what I need to do? Thinking About trying to seal channels somehow .. Also how'd this happen?

Thanks Joe

That’s because those channels are squishy sealant that was painted over from factory. So naturally the sealant will degrade and the paint will start coming off. Under the sealant is where the weld lies. Not much you can do except maybe figure out how to remove all the old sealant, reseal, and then repaint it

OK thanks for the information .. So do I need to do anything about this??? I don't care if it's like that....... as long as it doesn't lead to trouble down the road.

You have the start of some rust there which will only get worse with time if left alone. Worth the effort of sanding to clear bare metal and hit it with something to seal it up.

I noticed a few months ago that my truck's paint is cracked along the length of the seams/channels. This summer I'll be bedlining the entire roof to make sure everything's sealed up tight. I previously bedlined the rear liftgate (corrosion ate some pinholes right through the panel) and the look isn't terrible so I'm going to continue with the same up top where it's even less noticeable.

Worst case scenario, water gets under the sealant and stays there, resulting in rusting out the channel and causing water leaks

Also you need to get this fixed ASAP, I would like to know what happened here to cause this rip in the metal. As pictured below where I circled, your paint is already starting to bubble and degrade from underneath so Thts going to be a pretty big issue if left alone3CFBD1ED-1E4B-4943-98A3-4D6D5FAF81AC.jpeg

Durabak 18 white smooth. The color doesn't quite match the Oxford White on my 2010 but it still looks way better than the peeling and bubbling paint.

The only issue on my particular application was that I held onto the can for too long before having time to do the job and ended up using expired product. Some of it partially dried in the can so it's a semi-textured finish right now. When I do the roof I'm going to sand down the rough spots on the liftgate and apply another coat to smooth it out.

My 16 is flaking in the roof channels. Once weather warms a bit I’ll sand and respray it.

Joe M. My 09 Lmtd El white has those same cracks in the paint by the sun roof. This happened when an incompetent trans shop employe bent the roof on their lift with a cross bar at the top. The safety mechanism to prevent this was not functioning and they lifted it up into the bar. The only good news is it did not break the glass.
My point is that these cracks in the paint are from the rack being over loaded to bend the roof in some or some other force to do this. I have been is the auto body repair business for 50 plus years and see these stress cracks all the time. Scrape all the lose and bubbled paint off. Scrape a larger area till it stops popping off with ease. Clean the rust with a wire brush etc. as bast as u can.For a novice I would recommend a product such as rust-oleum OIL base primer and top it with gloss oil base paint. For these small areas on a roof so high that normal people can't see I would brush it on. Note: Oil base ONLY.

I had an 03 Eddy and now the 09 and love em. Enjoy

Good advice, I just got most of the rust out and painted mine with some old house paint the same +- color and a brush, nobody is going to see it.

You painted your truck with house paint and a paint brush? You’ve got to be joking
