So I ran out to the store not realizing my key wasn’t in my pocket. Had my phone with me and had Bluetooth turned on and the car started right up. Went to the store put the car in park waiting for them to bring out my purchase which they loaded in the trunk. Closed the rear gate and tried to put the vehicle in reverse and nothing would happen.

“no key detected” error popped up on dash.

PANIC as I feel my pocket and realize key is at home.

Try to put the car into drive nothing. Try to put the car into reverse. Nothing. try to put the car in neutral. Nothing.

Finally I turn it off open and shut the door and then press the start button and this time it works.

Anyone ever experience something like this?

There is no phone as a key on the expedition, I am not sure it works all that well on the aviator. You either have a key in the vehicle or something is horribly wrong. The key fobs don't work off of Bluetooth, they use RFID and are specifically programmed to each vehicle. Perhaps there was a spare in the console or something, or you had it but the battery is weak.

FordPass (app on smart phone) allows you to start the vehicle etc. but w/o a fob your stuck in park (I've tested this on mine).

Yes you can. You can use ford pass as others have stated

Lincoln's "Phone as a Key" debuted on the 2020 Aviator, and is included on the MY20 Navis and newer only. https://owner.lincoln.com/tools/account/keyless-remote-with-phone-as-a-key.html

So IF he has a '20 Navi, then yes...his phone would work as a key.

Otherwise, the previous MY 4th Gens allow you to use the app to unlock/lock/start the vehicle, but once you get in the vehicle you still need to press the start button in order to override the shift interlock and actually drive.

In other words, without the fob, @carymccarr should not have been able to drive to the store without the key.

I would guess either:
1) glitch that allowed him to do it
2) he did have the fob with him but it was next to his phone which can interfere with the signal from the fob (has happened to me several times)
3) he did have a fob with a weak battery
4) aliens

But again, if he has a MY20 Navi , then I don't know why it locked him out in this instance. But I would guess it's option 4 above.

(Edited to reflect that MY20 Navis do include "Phone as a Key"...my first version of the post indicated that the tech debuted on the Aviator and I wasn't sure if it had made it to the Navis yet)

I have a 2020 Navi BL with “phone as a key”.

was a very odd, confidence sucking experience. Same reason I still am nervous to use the door keypad...847f7d98280dbbbc6d060b60356d6529.jpg

Yo those keypads are sketch even on my 16. I don’t trust them one bit

I LOVE my keypad. This is the third one I’ve had (2001 F150 and 2014 F150) and they all work like a champ. Fob usually lives in the car and I have NEVER had a problem or a concern; especially now that I know I have my phone as a backup.

Half the time I go to lock it it doesn’t work. Then I have to open and close the door to reset the keypad and try again. If it doesn’t work the second time I usually am too spooked to try again and risk it not working when I go to unlock.

I never am without my phone so the keypad is pretty useless anyway.

mine just started not working.
I used to love being able to leave the key fob in the console.
Now I can’t get the keypad to lock the vehicle at all. It lights up when I press it but nothing works.

Sorry, when I replied I looked and there wasn't any indication in the profile or signature that would indicate a 20 Navi. And like I had mentioned phone as a key when it debuted on the Aviator was known to be sketchy as far as correctly working all the time.

And yes I am well aware of Ford Pass and Lincoln Way, have both, and no they are not considered phone as a key, they are enhanced remote lock and start, that is all.

Interesting. Do they limit phone as a key to just 2020+?

Yes. It was a new Lincoln feature for 2020. It is not just internet like the "old" version, there is additional tech that makes sure the phone is in the car so someone doesn't jump in and drive off without you. (Don't ask me what, but I'm guessing bluetooth or RFID or NFC).

It debuted as a late availability on the 2020 Aviator. I had researched it a bit when I was looking at getting an Aviator. It uses specific hardware inside the vehicle to recognize the phone, more than just the standard BT infotainment connection. I am pretty sure it was developed by Voxx Automotive and may be exclusive to Lincoln (Ford) for a couple of years. So yes, it is only on 2020 and newer Lincolns for now. I haven't seen it mentioned on any Fords yet.

My wife has a 2020 Aviator and I wanted to set it up for her. But she passed. She leaves her key in an inside purse pocket. If she can’t get into the car she knows she forgot her purse. I personally would love it. I forget my phone way more than my wallet. Plus my phone can be a wallet now.
