Hi all. I have a 2022 Ford Expedition Max. It just recently went to the dealer for service, because it had never received an OTA update. The dealership worked with the corporate software engineers to update all the various modules in the proper sequence. They speculate it somehow got so far behind updates, that it could no longer automatically receive any new updates. Apparently, that can happen. Unfortunately, they were not able to confirm if it is fixed, because Ford cannot push out an update to test. I just have to wait for a new update to be released and see if it automatically updates. However, Ford cannot tell me when the last update was released or when the next update will be released. Thus, I have know way of knowing if it’s fixed or how long I should wait. So, I have a couple of questions.

1. When was the last time you all received an OTA update?

2. How often does Ford release OTA updates for the Expedition?

3. Has anyone else had this problem?

4. If you have had this problem, was it fixed and how?

Thanks for the help.

December 5th, 2024. I only set the update schedule on Tuesday and Saturday, though.

About how often do you receive new OTA updates?

Purchased the vehicle in Dec, 2023. Two updates after middle September and one update on early October, within 3 weeks. Then last update on December 5th, 2024.

@expy22 Ford pushes out updates to groups of VINs at a time. There is no established time frame as to how often they get sent out to vehicles. To make things even more confusing, not all vehicles have all the same updates available for them to receive OTA or install at the dealership level or for people that DIY these things with FDRS. Your truck can be fully up to date to the point where you have no pending updates showing, and still be one or two Sync versions behind another Expo of the same year and similar build date. Once a new update is available for your truck on the server, it does not mean it is going to be sent out to you right away. It can take days, weeks or months before you'll see it.

Did you notice what Sync version your truck was on before the dealer applied updates and compared it to what Sync version you are now?

I did take note. I don’t remember the exact version it was on, but it was way behind. It came back with the latest version, per a ford service content link I found online.

A link to this document? If your truck is on Sync 24127 now and the dealer did apply all pending updates, then I would not expect any OTA's to come in any time soon.

The problem as I see it, is that I may be out of bumper-to-bumper warranty before I even know if it’s fixed.

Yes, that's the same one I posted. That is from GSB 21-7146 that was released in October of 2023 via PTS to all Ford dealers.

Message me the VIN and I'll poke around to see if I see anything that looks out of whack, but the only vehicles known to get legit stuck not getting OTA's were job 2021 F150's and Mach E's that were the first vehicles Ford produced that incorporated this OTA update system. Based on my experience with these types of things, I highly doubt your 2022 was "stuck' and your truck was most likely just a victim of the unpredictable and unreliable OTA process that Ford has in place.

This is one of the prime reasons I will likely not buy another Ford, their technology sucks. It took me 9 months after other people started getting updates for significant improvements/fixes for known problems. How the heck do they sell a $85,000 vehicle that the day I buy it is 9 months behind, but I had no way of knowing it!

I keep hearing “I will never buy another Ford” but usually for non-vehicle type concerns. It’s either service issues (which I find valid) or tech/software things. Just remember, most other companies that do the software/tech things really well do the vehicle things pretty terribly. I also haven’t heard any high praises for service on any manufacture lately. Complaints from GM, Audi, Mercedes, BMW, and even Lexus (rare until recent) of friends/family I know. I’ve been very happy with the driveability, comfort, function, performance, and capabilities of both our Expedition and MachE but the app-nature has been lacking. I’ll take that over a Tesla that has all tech and updates constantly but is built with hardware store materials. Just my .02
