I'm not sure what happened in the last few months, but the garage opener in our Expedition has become really weak. The front of the Expedition needs to be within a few feet of the garage door to open it. Our other car can open it from halfway down the alley.

It was always much weaker than our other vehicle, but now it's ridiculous.
  • Has anyone else experienced the same?
  • Anyone replaced the transmitter module under the hood before? I can't even find the part numbers.
  • Would you try reprogramming the opener first?

By chance do you have LED lights near the opener in the garage?
Garage is all fluorescent tube. But a long time ago I switched the incandescent bulb out in opener itself for an LED bulb. But that was 2 years ago, long before this problem worsened. And again, the other vehicle can open it from a long way away.

According to this post on a Raptor forum, they found wiping the opener and reprogramming it fixed the problem.

Will try and report back.

Also maybe the antenna on the door opener moved or the receiver is having some kind of interference. Happened to me and I had to readjust the wire antenna after 19 years.

That's just it - I too figured I would check on the transmitter, but I spent the whole morning looking through the parts catalogue, wiring schematics, shop manual etc, and I can't find any mention of a module in the front that's the transmitter. Just the Homelink button module in the sun visor.

Which is bizarre because my other vehicle (Audi, not Ford) has buttons on the roof console, but also a transmitter under the hood in the grill.

All I can figure is the transmitter is inside the sun visor button module.

Edit: Oh, you also meant the receiver wire on the opener. Yeah, I suspected that too, checked on it and it's in the same place. Plus the other car has no problems opening from a distance.

I would go and check it with an RF / spectrum analyzer. But not everyone has such a thing. Maybe swing by to a local ham radio club?

My 2015 F-150 and 2020 Expedition both have had range issues, with or without LED lights nearby. The expedition for some reason will always refuse to open on the first press unless it's inside the garage. Second press works most of the time, though. Never had these range issues (same door/opener) in my 2007 Charger.

We had issues, when we tried to pair the button with our Genie garage door opener.
Thought it might be the LED bulbs nearby too.

Will try without the lights on.

Yep, we have that same PROBLEM too w/ our 2024 Expy MAX Limited. When I first programmed the visor buttons for Garage Door #1 and Garage Door #2 and Gate #3, everything seemed normal. (I did have to clear all memory from both operators before I was able to pair them to the visor buttons, though) Our garage is 25' back from the street and when my wife drives up from the East and turns into the driveway, the nose of the Expy has to be within 5-6 feet of the garage door before the #1 button will open the garage door. If she drives up from the West and pushes the button on the street (25'-30' away) up she goes every time. What's the deal? I have NO IDEA! I hardly ever drive the Expy as it's my wife's car, but it has become an irritation for her recently.

I know that most of YOU FOLKS are much smarter than us about these newer auto electronics so, please help us out! I do know that our previous 2012 Expy EL Limited never missed a lick, as far as the garage door button functions were concerned. We love our new Expy and I told my wife just to talk to it nicely and see if it can get itself together. She saw no humor in my suggestion, it seems, from the eye roll I received. So, I would like to fix it, if possible. I know that I recently replaced the florescent tubes in all the strip lights to LED's but, they are rarely ON during the day and there's NO LED night light either. Unfortunately, as DieselMonk suggested, I also have no idea what a RF / Spectrum Analyzer is anyway or if I could borrow one, how to test it and know what to look for. Out of my league, I guess? Thanks in advance for any suggestions. Lance

Does your opener have a antenna wire hanging down? Maybe extend it or move it around a bit. Sure sounds like a blocked signal perhaps.

Me? It does, but the other vehicle can open the garage from 150ft away, so I'm inclined to think it's not the opener but the vehicle. I still need to try the reset and relearn procedure to see if that fixes it.

Ok. Here’s what I did and found out.
  • Wiped the homelink
  • Reprogrammed opener to button 1
  • Signal still weak. Had to be within feet of the garage door to open it
  • Wiped the homelink again
  • Programmed the opener to button 3
  • Much success. Opens from a distance
I’m not sure why changing it to button 3 worked. I’ll observe over the coming days to see if it was a fluke, or it really did work.

Program every button to that garage and try. There should be no difference in what button is programmed as far as the transmitter goes. There aren't 3 transmitters (for each button one). All 3 buttons use the same transmitter.

I did. The full sequence was:
- I wiped it.
- Programmed 1 - weak.
- Programmed 2 - didn't check distance - but it removes that garage opener from 1 automatically.
- Wiped it all
- Programmed 1 - weak
- Wiped it all
- Programmed 3 - strong

Not sure what to tell ya bud. That's what happened. Why it worked, I don't know. All I do know is I will have to put a sticker/post-it note on the visor so my wife doesn't call me every day when she forgets that I told her to use button 3 now.

not what I meant. program all three buttons so all three are opening and closing, without wiping it all in the between stages.
Wipe it all
Program button 1
Program button 2
Program button 3
Try.

See what you get.

I had a weak problem with all remotes. I added a Lift Master gate opener to my garage doors. The range improved dramatically.

Same problem here. In our old house, with the chain drive Lift Master openers, we could open our garage doors from several houses away. In our new house we have the jackshaft openers with the receiver in the wall button assembly. There is no way to add an external antenna. We also have a metal roof and stone veneer surrounding the garage door which may (or may not) affect the signal. Sometimes you think you can't get any closer to open the door, but closing is never an issue...even with the LED bulbs in the ceiling light illuminated from backing out and breaking the safety beam. Still beats getting out and raising the door manually. First World problem
