Hi all,

So I believe my APIM is failing. I called my local dealership and they wanted like $1000-$1500 to replace it (NOT very happy). He said it would be about $200 if I put my own in there and brought it to them to program (which I feel is still a lot of money).

With that I have some questions.
  1. Does anyone know the part number for a 2011 Expedition APIM module? I haven't been able to find it. This is the original Sync (NO touchscreen)
  2. If I get a used APIM, can I bring it to the dealer, and they can override the existing code with the code applicable to my vehicle?
  3. If I get a aftermarket head unit, do they make one that will allow me to continue to utilize the factory steering controls, the rear unit (for people to control/listen with headphones), and the USB/Line In jack in the console (this one isn't as big of a deal, but just curious
Thanks in advance for any help that you can provide. Needless to say, what Ford charges for this part is nothing short of absurd.

Which version of Sync does your truck have? I'm assuming it's the original being 2011. Pricing these modules out proves to be quite expensive even if you purchase it yourself.

The original. "Sync". Not Sync2 or Sync3.

Are they expensive even used? Also I would then ask my second question above.

$315 your cost, not cheap. I'm not sure about the used options or what you could do there.

As far as aftermarket I'm sure someone makes a unit that you can retain most of your controls, but at that point your probably better off paying an installer as they will have to purchase correct harnesses, modules, etc and figure out how to make it all go together.

If it were me I would source the module myself and then pay their stupid programming fee.... anyone else know more about this stuff?

That stinks. My 2017 SYNC 1 APIM just went out with under 500 miles left on my warranty. Dealer had my Expedition all week, still waiting. I got lucky it went out under warranty.

Just got mine back today. Curious what the price would have been if it wasn’t still under warranty ...

You can retain use of the steering wheel controls with an aftermarket stereo, but you have to buy and install an extra device. Look for steering control adaptor. You can get them through Crutchfield.

I don’t know of any way to retain use of the rear controls, headphone jacks, or the AUX input in the console. I bought a stereo that has Bluetooth wireless and can play from my phone and no longer need the AUX input.
