My 2005 Expedition is new to me. It has 80k miles. I am the second owner.
The car repair place says the groaning noise I hear when I press on the brake pedal is probably the master cylinder. Should I believe him or get a second opinion?

Take a mechanics stethoscope and listen for yourself. Have someone step on the brake pedal while you listen to the master cylinder and the brake booster area for this groaning noise. When I had it happen in the past it was the brake booster, not the master cylinder, making the noise.

Do you hear the sound emanate from under the hood, or from the wheel area underneath?

Tamara, I've never heard of a brake master cylinder making noise. Usually when they fail its a sinking pedal while at a stop, along with the check brake light on. Sounds like you might want to shop for a new mechanic! Noises are one of the toughest diagnostic on any car/truck. See if you can maybe have a different shop narrow down your noise. A groaning noise usually is the brake pads/ rotors, or something involving steering in combination with brakes. When do you hear this noise the loudest? Groaning is usually an overheated brake pads or rotor, or in some cases a loose friction material on brake pads causing movement when brakes are applied.

Oh lord, I was at mcdonalds this morning and while I was sitting there the pedal moved down a bit on its own, took me by surprise. I haven't had that happen before or since then, so hopefully it's nothing...

Hope you ordered the salad! Check your master cylinder level, if below normal, pull wheels do an inspection. It's probably nothing though.
