it looks like removing them drains power, the BC test shows -6HP and -10 lb-ft TQ, that was only brought back close to stock by adding the CAI....they failed to really complete the test by running it with the silencers and the CAI combined.

But in theory if you leave them in and add the CAI that test suggest you would be +5HP and +5 lb-ft TQ; add in a tune and you are probably getting even more out of it.

either way...my original question still stands; does anyone have a set the pulled out of their Expy that they’re willing to part way with for a reasonable price?

Isn't there a market section in here? My last forum had one.

Early 90's 'Fox Body' Mustangs have a air silencer. Just about everyone took them off. I don't remember a huge gain. It did sound cool, when you stomped on it. A slight timing advance( I think 2-3 degrees), really woke it up also. The rumor was the original 5.0l HO, was under rated and really 300+hp.

Anyone here remember guys who would turn their air cleaner lid upside down on the V-8 engines in the 1950’s, 1960’s and 1970’s, to make the engine sound louder?

Back then, some guys swore the lid flip allowed more air to the engine and increased power.

Still going on......

Oh yea, and there isn't a silver bullet when it comes to more HP by improving on the stock intake on a stock engine.

Absolutely I was one of those guys but I did it in the 80’s. Not on my Fastback Mustang then ( had a chrome lid open element housing style filter on it) but on my grandfathers 472 Coupe DeVille which had a cast iron lid. The lid weighed a ton. I guess the cast iron was supposed to help silent down the Quadra jet because who wanted to hear a Quadra jet in a Caddy? Evidently this 17 year old kid at the time did. Okay I’m guilty.... I still wouldn’t mind hearing that howling Quadra jet in that old Caddy roar.

Nick's Garage, on Youtube has dyno tested some old engines, with and without the stock air cleaner. It did not make a difference running with a stock cleaner.

When I was young, I owned a 1969 Chevrolet Camaro SS/RS Pace Car replica convertible - with the optional cowl-induction hood. When you floored the accelerator, and opened the secondary barrels, a solenoid operated plate opened at the rear of the hood (near the windshield), to draw extra air into the engine.

I loved that sound and probably wasted a lot of gas with that option.....

Lol, I had 2 Quadra jets on an Edelbrock ram log manifold on a 350 in my 55 Chevy with no air filters.

Yeah I’ve got a Ram Air air cleaner on 69 Eliminator. It’s got a vacuum solenoid that opens a flap on the lid into a forward facing air scoop. It wastes gas period ,but not because of the flap ( because I can’t see it under the scoop) but because of the crazy big solid cam I got in the Ol Girl. But when it still puts a smile on my face and others, it’s not really wasted.2B7C10F7-C7EA-4A2E-88AF-895CA8AE7227.jpeg89D17D85-8156-4E14-B88C-B1831F95DBCC.jpeg
