Looking at a couple of Expeditions. The 2013 has the v8 while the 2015 has the 3.5L. Outside of other differences, is there a preference of engines for reliability?

They both can have problems but they all can. I like the later models because of the electric steering, many with remote start, and the extra power of the v6.

Recently, we bought a '15 Limited after driving all three trims:XLT, Limited and Platinum. Never drove the V8, so can't comment. Drive both to evaluate for yourself. Also, visit YouTube for reviews of the 2015+ Expy with EcoBoost. For example, .

I read the 3.5 tow rated at 6,000 while the v8 is 9,000?

Where did you read that?

The vehicle tow ratings are based upon how they are equipped. The ones with the HD tow package are rated to tow more.

My 2015 Expedition Limited 4x4 came standard with the HD tow package and is rated to tow 9,200 pounds.

The 5.4 and 3.5 both have the same 9,200 max rating with HD tow. On either truck verify that it has the round Ford 7-pin connector on the receiver. Both would also have the built in trailer brake controller if they have HD tow. Both engines have known issues of timing chain components but are overall solid short blocks. EPAS steering on 15-17 saves some gas, but most F-150 owners report does not last as long as the hydraulic setup on the modular engines. The hydraulic rack usually lasts the life of the vehicle, the epas seems to average 100-150k. My aunt owns an 08, 14, and 17 and likes all of them, when I’m at her house there are 4 Expeditions. It’s like an expy party.

It was a guick Google search by year but if they have the same HD tow rating then it’s not an issue. Sorry for all the questions lol. There are 2 in Houston and I will buy one but won’t be able to see it beforehand. Having both inspected by a company down there. 2013 is an XL and the 2015 is a SSV. Both about the same price and mileage. The SSV has the rubber floor in it which may be a plus because it will get exported to the Bahamas for us to use there. Gonna get a lot of sand in it. Also use it to tow a 25 foot center console.

Yep just verify they both have it, being an XL and an SSV there is a good chance one or both won’t have it and the transmission cooler is a big want.
