My concern would be with what size fuse is on the wire you chose. In the fuse box the trailer fuse is a 30 amp if I remember correctly. Kind of frustrating to know a specific fuse and wire are in the engine compartment and no clear steps on how to tap into it.
Maybe this weekend I'll go over to...
It looks like I'll end up running a wire. At the moment the running light signal isn't being passed on my trailer so I have other problems. Brakes work, brake lights work, turn signals work but no running lights so I can't pull the trailer at night.
Instead of getting 9 or 12 volts I only get 2...
I'm determined to find the elusive orange wire to route power back to the 7 pin trailer plug. In the engine compartment in front of the driver is this big plug. I see a fat orange wire on the left (front of the car) but no orange on the side that goes to the back of the Expedition.
If one of...
I have the tow prep package which includes the 4 pin and has the blue wire (electric brakes) run back to the 4 pin connector (capped).
Do not follow the steps in various YouTube videos which tell you to take apart your dash and pull your radio to find the brake harness. Completely unnecessary...
I can't get past that metal bar. My 10 yrs arm couldn't squeeze past the bar to reach the plug.
Guess I'm going to have to take out the radio and pop apart sections of the dash.
What a pain!
The steps in the video to grab the tow plug from behind the dash look easy but my 2016 Expy has a vertical piece of metal which prevents me from simply reaching around to access the plug. I put it back together and I'll try it again when I have more time.
@bsevans5: how did you get to the plug...
I would greatly appreciate a picture of the wiring harness and part number for the "pin" (?). Does the harness tie the 12 volt line to a 40 amp fuse?
Yesterday we had the Expy at the dealership because of a brake error message and the service writer couldn't tell me where the 12 volt trailer...
I ground off the weld and removed the 4 pin mount. I made it smooth so I could install the 7 pin. I then painted over the area. Although the Hopkins 4 pin connection was smaller than that of the Ford - I jammed them together and circled them with a zip tie. I also attached the blue wire so I...
I found
which illustrates a much easier path to connecting the controller.
This leaves my question about the location of the 12 V line. I guess I'll cut into the area surrounding the blue wire - (right behind the 4 pin) to see if the 12 V is hiding in there somewhere. If it's not there then...
Thank you for the link and information about the connection. I have the Trailer Tow Prep Package. A 4 pin is welded to the hitch. I plan on grinding off the welds and placing the mount for the 7 pin in its place.
Now I need to locate the connection under the dash to plug in the brake...
Just bought a 2016 XLT 4X4 with the Class IV tow package. I will be adding a 7 pin. I see the wire tagged elec which I know to be the blue I need for the brakes. Before I cut into the loom - does anybody know if the orange 12 volt wire is also in there? Another old thread on the Truck forum said...
