Welcome to the site!
The expy can do great things off road with some good tires.
A lift or leveling kit is very useful for extra clearance.
AWD is good for in town on ice and snow.
Turn it to 4H when you hit serious dirt - ie. more than washboards!
When you see a steep climb or...
Yeah ... those of us left are complete idiots!!
Anyway, welcome to the site. There is a ton of info under the
search function.
As for the stock stuff, two words ... angle grinder!! :)

Post some pics too - lifted expy's with meaty tires are awesome.
.
A problem many older expy's had was a leaky stock windshield.
Rain could get through near the firewall and mess up important electrical / computer items.
Mine needed the GEM replaced, i believe.
.
... not with chrome rims and small tires it doesnt ...
X2 !! :)
Way to get out there and go for it though!! A little more lift and some decent
tires will have you pulling those others out - the 5.4's specialty! :)
.
So ... what was the CEL code?
Have you checked all the vacuum lines, cuz the 1st gens are notorius
for cracked boots and lines at the pcv's - especially the one back
against the firewall.
Keep us posted! :)

I'm running the readylift 2.5" torsion keys with rancho 5000 series shocks.
What the key does is re-index your factory torsion bar "start" setting thereby achieving the lift without cranking your bars.
This allows future adjustment as well if one day you decide to add a bull guard with...
Yup ... just did this one too!
Love the results offroad and don't drive crazy
enough to need it on the road.
Was going to make some quick disco's for it but said ... NAH!
Yet another part to lighten the expy's weight. :D
.
Always glad when i see someone taking apart an expy!
Bumpers, seats, etc... who needs 'em?! :)
I'm looking at the same situation and thinking the wattage rating will be a
problem. Factory is probably only around 50 or 60 watts.
You could use the factory wiring to power a relay and...
"Except that Expeditions don't have rain gutters ..."
Ahhhh yes - that could be a problem! hehehe
I like the surco basket myself - nice tire carrier attachment too.
I'm not sure what racks are available but look into rain gutter mounts too.
Supposed to be the strongest type of mount for load bearing.
Let us know what you find! :)
Just did Bull Road (trail 202) in the Bradshaw Mt.'s this weekend.
Certain sections are easily a 3.5 to 4 on the ratings and required 4-low
the entire length of trail.
Only other vehicle at the end of this road was a pair of quads!
I just love the look of utter surprise when they see...
Check your sway bars, end links and bushings if you have not already.
Steering stabilizer does help some, especially with bigger tires.
Keep us posted! :)
Yup ... it's with coils.
Add spacers and new torsion keys (or twist) at that time too if you want.

Welcome aboard and good luck!
"Apparently Expeditions suck offroad..."
Then why is it so darn fun! :)
Seriously though ... wonder what year they were testing. (2004 posting)
1st gen's seem better suited than later years.
Also, most of us that offroad frequently are not running even close to stock.
With the wd-40 fix i had to do a couple of applications.
Blast 'em good then open and close the door "vigorously" several times.
Lastly .. don't forget the rear hatch and window. Good Luck!
PS. Make sure the in-cab switch isn't on!
Got the step-son living with us for a few months and he has the PS3.
I am shamefully HOOKED on this 1st person shooter game called Borderlands.
I was around 5 when "Pong" came out! :)
My truck is my offroad / prospecting rig and has not seen the 3rd row in over a decade. 2nd row probably coming out soon along with all the carpet.
In one large plastic container with
snap on lid is camping supplies - stove, dishes, coffee pot, etc.
In a small duffle bag next to that is...
