So, after some procrastinating I am about to remove the exhaust manifolds. I could not find any good videos demonstrating the driver's side removal. The Haynes manual calls for the front driveshaft to be removed. Is this step totally necessary? And feel free to offer any other advice. Thanks!
I agree, I often end up going with parts from Autozone only because of the lifetime warranty, even if "Duralast" is not my favorite brand. Thanks very much for the links.
Thinking about replacing the radiator too. It looks OK, no corrosion anywhere. But it looks to be the original (185K). Was the Duralast an exact fit or did it require improvisation, extra parts, etc. to secure it?
OK. I am glad you said this. I was having doubts about the need to do this. I will just get the radiator out and work with what space I have. Thanks again.
I've decided to try to give myself as much space as possible to do the head gasket job, which means I am now trying (not super successfully) to try to remove the front grill and bumper. Headlight assemblies are out. The clips on the grill seem like a nightmare to try to remove without ruining...
Thank you! These are good tips. I will share some photos and let you know how things go. I foresee a fairly long process here, as I work pretty slowly. I will start disassembly in the next couple of days.
As descibed in this thread, my 03 blew a head gasket. As the motor has 185K, I figure I'll replace both gaskets at the same time. I plan on taking the long, slow route, by removing the radiator, etc. to more easily access the heads.
There are various parts that I'll replace while I have easy...
Thanks a lot for recommending the block tester kit! Worked like a charm to definitively diagnose the blown head gasket on the Expedition. It also helped me to realize that my '91 Volvo 740 did NOT have a blown head gasket, when I was convinced it did have one.
Thanks very much for your input. I was hoping it wasn't that. I will check it out more closely. Pulling the heads on this particular vehicle seems like not the funnest job in the world, given how far back everything sits.....Thanks again.
Here is the brief backstory:
- We live in area with cold climate in the winter. In December and January, our 03 would occasionally throw a P0301 (cyl 1 misfire) along with a 0316 (engine misfire on start up). I would clear the codes and they would not return for some days.
- I replaced the cyl 1...
Thanks to some generous souls on YouTube I have figured out how to fix the driver's door window regulator on my 03.
I do have one question for those of you who have successfully completed this fix.
In my case, the glass came completely out of the clips (and some pieces of the regulator broke...
Never having towed anything greater than a 4x8 utility trailer, I wanted to make sure I had all my bases covered before towing a travel trailer (3000-3500 lbs.) with my 2003 expy.
I have the 4R70W transmission. I'm guessing a transmission cooler would be a good idea? If so, any recommendations...
I wasn't aware of the Bosch website until a moment ago. Pretty helpful:
