Automatic gear oil change is a topic that confuses!

How does the pump circulate dirty/gritty fluid with a filter in place? How does it keep from wearing out the pump?

Car started shaking violently when turned on this morning

I vote for all the rocker arms to be replaced if they are replacing the camshaft. Broke a rocker arm shaft on my 82 K5 6.2 (twice - same rocker arm shaft). They replaced the rocker arm shaft and reused all the rocker arms. The next time it broke (almost 1 year later to the week) I fixed it...

Automatic gear oil change is a topic that confuses!

Haven't done the Expedition, yet. Transfer cases on the truck/blazers required pulling a drain plug, reinstalling the drain plug, removing the fill plug and using a special cap/hose/valve attachment on a 1 qt. plastic bottle (used old gear oil bottles filled from gallon Dexron 2 or 3 jugs) to...

Tire cable/chains on rear only for 4x4 too?

I haven't used chains on a highway since 1978 (small 2WD Pontiac economy car and lots of snow on a weekend trip home to WV). Since then, the 4WD trucks/SUVs haven't needed chains to get through the snow/slush, etc. When my father-in-law (a Ford truck guy) would get out in the off road areas in...

Dealer Recommends Transmission change at 44K. Is this a money grab?

Hyundai (dealership I bought my Coupe from) tried that on me. 40,000 miles, in for an annual inspection. The service person asks me when I want to schedule it for the 40,000 mile check up/service visit. I ask what that covers. She says (among other things) draining the transmission and...

What did you do to the expy today

Drove it to the gym, then the Hallmark card shop and then the grocery store and then home. I checked the "book" in the console and saw we've put almost 600 miles on it since I changed the oil/filter around the middle of October. And on the way home we talked about how much we liked it. That...

The capacity of the EL always amuses me

I was sitting in a parking lot yesterday, reading a book, while my wife went in a store to return some clothes she'd ordered (and buy some to replace those). It was raining, kind of cold, the engine was off, the radio still playing, I had two cups of hot beverages (mint coco and cappicino ) and...

    Engine temp low?

Low coolant should result in a warmer than normal reading. It does on my truck. I'd check the thermostat. I had one hang up on my 82 K5 Blazer and it would get kind of warm if you were working the engine, but pull up to a stop light, or coast down a hill and you could see the temp. ga. drop...

The capacity of the EL always amuses me

The reason I bought the EL. The Expedition was purchased haul people and their stuff around. An extra foot is that much more room for people and stuff. We went to the gym this morning (just the two of us) and once again we were talking about how nice it was to have so much room, even when we...

    Tow package fuel economy

Filled up the 2014 (5.4, 3.73 rear) this morning after just over 300 miles of local driving. Pretty surprised it calculated out to 20.2 mpg. Best since we got it. Then again, going down the roads it's only running about 1100 rpm at 40/45 mph.

I don't even care if you laugh, I did, afterwards

You made me chuckle, not good enough for a laugh. I would say, "Try harder." But you seem to give up easily.

    14 Limited w/Nav - Sound quality isn’t great

I have no idea what system is in my 2014 EL Limited but everyone that rides in it tells me how good the radio sounds. The only issue I have with it is at the volume level we use it seems like one setting is a little too quiet/harder to hear and turning the volume knob 1 click seems a little too...

Where do you put your keys?

I keep the one for my car in my pocket all the time. Only buttons I've hit while moving around are the lock/unlock buttons. I keep the one for my wife's car and the Expedition in a basket my wife put on the kitchen counter top for spare/extra keys. I get the key for the vehicle I will be...

I don't even care if you laugh, I did, afterwards

Pulled the 14 Expedition out of the carport yesterday to take care of a leak that was dripping rainwater on the sunroof area. Parked it out front of the house, got some of the spray leak stuff that works (sometimes - I sure wouldn't get in a boat made with it) and sprayed the inside of the roof...

    Memory Seats

Yeah, mine's a 2014 but it works the same way. I'm tall so I have the seat all the way back (I set it as the #2 setting as my wife is supposed to drive it more than me). For her (short) she has the #1 position. She noticed (and commented to me) one day that when she shuts the engine off the...

    Where does the oil go?

No experience (and don't want any either) with the 5.4 Ford engines "using" oil. Several of my Chevy small blocks have "used" oil over the years. You say you have no spots on the floor. How about signs on the intake/valve covers, timing cover, etc? If it's leaking some it may burn/evaporate...

    Tow package fuel economy

Went for a ride yesterday out in the country. Some 4 lane, some 2 lane, small towns, etc. Nothing over 60 mph for posted speed limits. Ate at Chic fil a (breakfast). No more McDonalds breakfast stuff for me. Took the 2014 Expedition, my wife and mother-in-law. Stopped here and there at...

    Tow package fuel economy

Funny. I think I understand what you mean. When I got my 81 Z28 with the 350 4 barrel and cowl induction hood I'd catch myself sitting at stoplights with the clutch in popping the gas pedal down just to hear the door open up and the 4 barrel suck air right in front of the windshield. Hot as...

Expedition on the list of 6 vehicles most likely to reach 300,000 miles

https://www.autoblog.com/photos/vehicles-most-likely-to-hit-300000-miles/ Thought it was neat since I like to keep stuff a long, long time (My 81 Z28 and 86 IROC Z28 are still in my garage).

First oil change yesterday - no issues

I had a buddy, in the Army, that went off on me one day when I screwed the new oil filter on my engine without filling it with oil first. He swore up and down that would destroy the engine, to run till the pump filled the new filter and then pushed oil out through all the passage ways in the...

First oil change yesterday - no issues

So, you're saying disregard the instructions on the oil filter and do not tighten it one full turn after gasket contact with the engine/oil filter mount? If you read it then you read the sentence "Installed the new filter after oiling the gasket and tightened it one full turn after contact."...

Right rear brake light stopped working....

Oh yeah, I pulled the wires different directions and pulled "out" on all three and none popped loose and nothing stopped the light from working. When it happens again I'll try to get the plug apart and see if I can see exactly which one is out of place.

Right rear brake light stopped working....

Well, it's working, again, for now. It was the park light, not the brake light. Some things are better verified without help from someone else (who knows what a light is, but not necessarily the difference between brake and park lights. Anyway, it's a park light, not the brake light, or at...

First oil change yesterday - no issues

Somewhere, I have one of the big "sockets" that fits on the end of the bigger oil filters. I couldn't find it. I had no trouble finding a couple of the small ones that fit the filters on the S10 Blazers, Fiero GT, etc., etc. That would have been easier to use. If I don't find it before long...

Right rear brake light stopped working....

Last night my youngest son asked if I'd checked the fuses. He said Ford isn't bashful about using two fuses for the same size circuit GM would use just one on. He's had an F350 for years and must have had to replace some fuses. He told me the fuses would not look like the ones I'm used to...
