03 lower ball joint

Anyone had these replaced? My local independent shop is trying to figure out if they can just replace the ball joint or if they have to replace it with the lower control arm as a unit. I trust these guys, this is the third vehicle of mine they have worked on over the last 8 years, but I think they have a knowledge gap on this one.

I had them done on a 2000 last February. They just replaced the ball joints. There was a lot of banging involved in the job. They said it is a very common repair. I don't know if the 03's are the same though.
