Recently starting having significant issues with our 05 Eddie Bauer Edition.

Idles down too low, and occasionally stalls when coming to a stop. Intermittent issues when pulling hills.

Recently spent over $1k getting plugs changed - improved somewhat, but no true fix. Mechanic said the coils are all hitting so shouldn't be any issues there.

Any ideas? Preferably something I can do myself.

Have you tried cleaning the throttle body and idle air control? I had a bouncy idle and cleaned everything. Idles like a camp now.

05 I think they had cam phazers that run on oil pressure? is the oil in the "hatched" safe area on the dipstick? are you using 5w20 oil?

Same issue here on my 01 5.4 non-EB w/ 165K. starts/runs fine, but after 30 miles or so, when coming to a complete stop (such as interstate exit), RPM varies, and if it drops too low, engine will stall. I can hold the idle RPM up by playing w/ gas pedal, keeps it from stalling. Starts right up again (so far). Will try some of the cleaning suggestions and see what happens.

I second what copper said. The idle air control valve gets carboned up and needs to be cleaned out. When bad enough, stalling, rough idle, and all kinds of bad conditions appear. Pull it spray all the carbon out, new gasket, see what you get.
