Anybody out there know of an upgrade beyond my stock am/fm cassete mach stereo in my 2000 expedition. It has the 5 disc changer in the console and the 8 inch sub in passenger rear. I don't want to put aftermarket if I can avoid it. Do any of the newer units with cd have the same plug setup and size? Mine is the 1/2 din size. Anybody tried a different ford or Lincoln unit with success? Thanks Moose.

None of the parts are parts, the factory system is a system. The CD changer will not work with anything but the factory, same with your sub. The door speakers are the only interchangeable part, and they are the cheapest part of the system.

Just swap out your deck, get the features you want. You will spend more on a factory deck than you will for an aftermarket, with better features, installed.

FYI, all those factory parts are cheap and junk, but cost way more than they should. No one replaces factory with factory, unless they have some bias against the aftermarket. But remember, does Ford build stereos or Cars?

another FYI:

I was an audio installer for years - home and car. My Kia has a Pioneer Elite/Focal Utopia system, no subs, no amps, just speakers and a deck. Expensive speakers and deck, upgraded wiring, and a voltage stabilizer in the engine, but that is all.

My Expy has the factory Deck, CD changer, and I pulled the doors speakers and swapped for less than $100 in door speakers. Its night and day. and that is from an audio guy who would love to put 4 12" woofers in the back and ditch the seat. But I have kids...

The cardboard in the doors is the weak spot in any car, and I mean ANY CAR.

The biggest issue I have is the front speakers are too strong in the midrange for my taste. What brand and model did you put in front? Also do you have to pull front panels to replace? I don't think speaker grills come off.

You can hear how bad factory speakers are, good for you. All they have is mid range (just like Bose). I cant even hear talk radio on most factory speakers.

Yes, you pull the door panel. Its 6-8 screws, very simple. You can even hang it on the wiring, you can get it out of the way without disconnecting a thing. I did all 4 of mine in under an hour. I have another thread where I posted about putting mine in, but its SUPER easy. You cut and splice the +/- wires, and simply swap the speaker.

I am a pioneer fan for inexpensive speakers. They make a good product on the cheaper end. They have 3 way (some 4 ways even) (low/mid/hi) speakers that are around $50 a pair. The Expy uses "6x8" speakers in all 4 doors. You may find your problem clears up with a 50 pair, or go nuts and replace all 4 speakers for 100 bucks.

Yeah, believe it or not I used to run multiple amp, electronic crossovers, A.D.S separates, the whole deal. I guess I would cheat this time. I'm too old to tear into everything again. I agree for low cost, pioneer has been my choice too. Thanks, Moose.

Hope you already have kids! With that kinda bass pounding you, I don't think your little swimmers will want to swim. Good god dude, even in my younger days I never put in 2 18's. That's insane. Well that's probably one of the reasons at 60 years old I don't hear so well. Loud motorcycles and cars sure didn't help. I started this thread trying to get a Ford head unit upgrade, but got every response but!

I put 2 18s in a 1990 Geo Metro. You can never have enough. and that was 15 years before kids. NOW I have the kids, so my big stuff will have to wait until they are big enough to handle it.

Hence the swap out of 4 door speakers (Pioneer TS-A6885R @ 49.99 a pair)and I am still factory beyond that.

Just curious, can you still hear? I didn't run 1/3 what you ran. At 60 yrs old I'm having a hard time. Ah to be young!

Great audio is not about loud, its about the opposite. Most older people turn up the sound to get more volume when what they want is more clarity. A great system sounds AWESOME at low volumes. I did more high end car audio installs for guys over 60 than under.

That said, on a saturday with the sun blazing and the windows open, I tear that up.

yulp...so many young guys just think its about being loud and want to hit 160s...I play mine at a reasonable volume unless giving a demo

That's the way I was, I used to have top end alpine or eclipse head units, pre amp only usually 3 amps a 12 inch sub, ads or eclipse separate speaks. And a precision power electronic crossover to make it all sound real nice!
