1999 side mirrors

Do all side mirrors lose thier inside coating over time? My 99 has. You can see through the glass and see the coating peeling. Has this happened to anyone else? Is there a TSB out on the Expedition about this? Can I get Ford to change these out? Thanks

If you have an Eddie Bauer with the built-in turn signal indicators, then this is a common problem. Some people have had luck dealing with the manufacturer of the mirror lenses, a company called Muth Mirrors. I believe they have a website.

I called Muth Mirror Systems and they are going to replace the mirrors. Very nice people to talk to. Ford was no help at all. Local Ford dealer would not return my calls, after many calls I did get to the service manager and he said his computer would not let him in to find out about the TSB. I talked to Ford and they said take it to your dealer. So I think that Ford dealer knows that Muth will replace the mirrors so they charge me out the butt for parts and labor, then they get Muth to pay them for replacement of the mirrors. Just a thought, I may be wrong.

I bought my 98 in May 04 and both mirrors were peeling. I talked to the Ford dealer that I bought it from and they replaced both mirrors with Muth ones for free. Nice and clear now, but, they viabrate when you drive. I guess that's what you get with aftermarket stuff.

The person that I talked to said they had made these for Ford, thats why they are going to replace my mirrors for free. If you check thier web site they have a great page that shows how to install the mirrors.

I have posted the following previously, but it seems this needs to be brought up again:

"By the way, for all of you that have "shakey" mirrors, this too is a simple fix, for which Ford was going to fix for $440/each (mirror replacement).

Basically, the mirror is held in with one large center mounted plastic snap pin, guided by two opposing corner slide pins, and operated again by two opposing corner actuators.

I found that my slide pin guides were loose, being a simple thin metal clip, and the actuators were loose where they are snapped into place on the mirror mount.

1) Pull mirrors per web site (Muth) instructions - simple

2) I simply crimped the metal slide guides in a little more so that they were tighter on the slide pins.

3) (Don't laugh) I stuffed a little aluminum foil around the base of the actuators using a small screw driver.

Viola...no more shakey mirrors. All it took was about 1/2 hour per mirror, which if I used Ford's labor rate, would mean that I should be charging folks about $900/hr to do provide this fix...any takers?"

Thanks for the info rwinch. Sorry, I did chuckle a little because I have pennys stuffed in the swivel points of mine. I'll have to give it a shot maybe this weekend.

I installed the Muth mirrors yesterday. Its nice to be able to see along side of the Expy. One of the drive pins wants to pop out of the mirror easily, so I may try the aluminum foil to see if this helps. Thanks T

The aluminum foil was stuffed around the base of the actuator, to tighten it up and keep the shaking to a minimum.
If the actuator pin snaps out of the mirror (the ball end), then this is a different issue that I am not sure the foil will help.
Have you pushed the mirror on all the way? I remember that it took quite a good shove to pop them on all the way.

I would like to fix shakey mirrors on a 98 Expedition. RWINCH says to pull the mirrors according to Muth.

Does anyone know if this means to pull off the glass by hand (with gloves) with the mirrors still on the truck?

Could someone who has fixed them confirm?

Otherwise, I think I should just replace the whole mirror assemblies.
