hi,
just bought a 2004 5,4l XLT yesterday.
when I drove the car this morning I heard that tick noise from the engine.
one of my friends has a 1998 5,4l with the same noise, but he doesn´t care :D

I would say the noise sounds like on this video...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=exYuVX-3GNI

he writes, he replaced the cam phasers. if I´m right, the ´04 has no cam phasers!?

does someone know anything about it or had the same problem?

later or tomorrow I´ll take a video of mine.

The 03 and 04 had the 2V engine, no cam phasers. The cam phasers were introduced in the new 3V engine that came in the 05 and up.

A common issue on the 2V engines (at least on the 1st gen) is the exhaust manifold gasket blowing out, I've seen it mostly on the passenger side manifold.

I have both a rattle on cold statup and a tick similar to that video. You and I both have 2V engines that do not have cam phasers. I believe my timing chain guides are broken or the chains are stretched and this is causing both the noise on cold start and the constant soft tick. Either way it isn't something I'm going to deal with immediately. When the rattle starts to last 10 or more seconds on startup I'm going to have to tear apart the front of the engine and replace guides and chains. I'd bet your friend's 98 has the same issue, mine is doing it with 125k miles on the clock.

I drove it a little more and the noise is gone.
So I think it's just there when the engine is cold.

I have an '05 and it has that same ticking sound only a little louder. It has plenty of power so I'm not sure if it is an issue or not.

fords are notorious for having noisy injectors. Welcome to the gas engine sounds like a diesel club! haha
