Hi all, my 04 expedition started slipping about a week ago, and yesterday, when i tried to drive the car from Park, almost wouldn't catch the first gear even though i revved up engine. After a few revs, started to move slowly.

When I got home, after a scary ride through the Lincoln tunnel, hoping i don't get stranded inside the tunnel that was jam packed at 1.40am, I somehow reached home. Once I reached, when i put the vehicle in Reverse, the car would go forward! So i just put it in Park and turned off the engine.

This morning, I checked the transmission fluid was empty! Yes empty. Dry dipstick. So i went to the gas station (in my second vehicle) and got 2 gallons of transmission fluid and poured that in. After a few repeated tries of D and R, it suddenly was catching reverse gear. I then drove it in D, and R a few times, and left it.

Now my questions are
1) is how many quarts of Transmission oil does my 04 Expedition (V8 with the 5.1L engine), take?

2) did I do harm to the transmission driving it for the past few days?

3) does transmission oil have/need a filter? If so can i do this myself? I am very good at lots of things DIY style, but if too complicated, will just get to a dealer or mechanic. (I have to find a good mechanic in my area.)

I might have forgotten to mention an important part of the equation, my vehicle has about 45K miles on it only.

Thanks a lot for any help or knowledge i can get from this forum.

You have a leak, plain and simple. You need to get it to your favorite garage and have them work it. (I can tell by your questions that DIY transmission repair is not in your immediate future)
