Getting roaring noise while driving. Told it could be tire noise. Replaced tires but roaring is still present. Noise is heard driving straight and increases when turn to the left. Noise seems to go away when turn to right. Any ideas?

Sounds like a wheel bearing, or more correctly a 'unit hub', since the bearings themselves aren't actually replaceable. That noise is the bearing rollers slowly destroying themselves.

These are not cheap, the part alone is about $300 per wheel. (your 2004 has them at all 4 corners) They are not really all that hard to replace, if you can do front brakes, you should be able to do it yourself. If not, then expect at least 1 hour labor per wheel at a shop.

Thanks. I talked to a friend after I submitted this post and he told me the same thing.

Jack up the suspect wheel, spin it by hand, and and see if it makes the sound.

I have an '05 4x4 that this happened to on the rear as well but I found the part for $491. Do you know if it's the same part on the '04 as on the '05? If so, where could I find it cheaper! I cussed Ford left and right for making these assemblies this way.

My bro just picked up an Expy and it does that same grinding/roaring noise but when he takes a corner while accelerating, it gets loud. Do you think its the unit hub? Thanks

04 expedition roaring noise

Was curious if you replaced your wheel bearing or all of them and if it fixed your problem? My 03' is doing the exact same thing. Thanks.

Hah, you can throw on this thing. Link

Don't actually have any actual experience, just posting because it's rather cheap, though I'd be worried about reliability? I replaced my front one with a Timken one I got on Amazon (I think it was this one -> Link) Seemed legit, hah.

We did one in my old man's 04 a couple months ago. Pretty sure he just bit the bullet and did the Ford unit. Seems like they go out around 130-140k. All of his are bad or going.

I think I need a wheel pack on my '04, but would like some feedback. Tie rod end symtoms - intermittant thumping from my front right - changed the tie rod (1/2 turn out of alignment after I was done - proud of that). Thumping became much lighter, but now persistant. New rotor, rotated wheels, new half shaft, still there. Also replaced the seal / added oil in the front diff where the half shaft inserts. I mention this because someone else thinks the clutch in the differential may be the issue. For years I would have a slight tick if re-accelerating while turning. I believed it's from the xfer case. It's been getting worse the past few months. But could it be a clutch in the front diff and has finally given out? I'm still thinking it's the wheel bearings. I won't be able to re-produce the symptom on a jack, so how can it be diagnosed?

I luv this... But kind of costly.. You attach the clamps around the chassis and security the transmitters.. Drive the Expy with the headphones and when you start hearing the noise.. Flip the channels to see which channel the noise is the loudest...

I went ahead and dropped it off at the shop, just don't have tmie. They found a frozen caliper and believe it's the issue. Will advise if it fixes the symptoms.
