2004 replacement ABS speed sensor

I'm replacing the LF abs sensor on my '04 XLT. It turns out that the pickup on the old sensor is completely different from the new one - the old one is a cylinder, the new one is about 1/4" longer and rectangular. The cable length and rubber retention points are the same on both old and new sensors.

Has anybody else run into this? Any suggestions?

I guess if it attaches the same try it. Just be sure you try a few panic stops away from other vehicles. Other than that, check with who you bought it from. Sounds to me like they gave you a wrong part.

I forgot to add that the sensor bottoms out on the ring inside the hub and can't be tightened down. I also verified the part number earlier today.

Well that says it all. Your going to have to return that one. Can't you buy locally? Might have to remove and match. Bring your Vin # with you, sometimes mid year they change. That may be your scenario.

Well that says it all. Your going to have to return that one. Can't you buy locally? Might have to remove and match. Bring your Vin # with you, sometimes mid year they change. That may be your scenario.

I purchased it locally. Unfortunately it can't be returned because my son-in-law used a hammer and screwdriver to 'convince' the sensor to fit. I'd normally do the work, but injured my thumb and am benched for awhile. I'll use the VIN on a search to see if it mkkes a difference.

He did the old Harley Davidson install. Use a hammer, if it doesn't fit, use a bigger hammer. Thank God when I finally started wrenching on Harley's, it wasn't untill 2001, by then hammers were only used to push in axles, and the boss!

I ended up replacing the hub. Got everything installed, but spent the last couple hours hunting for the harness connection for the abs sensor, but can't find it. Does this thing tend to go into hiding?

The thing connects up towards the master cylinder. In the engine compartment, past the inner fender. I was gonna recommend just doing the whole hub anyway. Hope you got agood one, and not the cheap 1 year warranty one, or you will be doing it again.

I went with the 3-year NAPA hub. Finally found the connector after removing the inner fender liner and feeling around on the bottom of the inner fender.

I did the same thing. Disconnected it nonchalantly, thinking it was in an obvious place to reconnect it. When it came time to reconnect it I couldn't find it! Glad to hear you found it .

Yep - rusting away. Typical Minnesota Expy. With 180k miles on it, i'm not sure it's worth the $$$ to have them replaced.

You can get a set of slip ons, that go over the original factory ones for about $45 per side, or weld on one's for about $180 per side. Did mine about 3 years ago, and they seem ok still

I'll be looking into those - thanks for the link. What kind of prep is involved with the slip ons?

I bought the slide on one's, sanded or cut out as much rust as I could, and then used rust converter, then primer, and then painted it all, slid on the covers, welded them on, and primed and painted them. They are starting to show their age, more like the truck is, starting to rust again, its been over 3 years since I did it so that isn't bad.
