Hello all.
First post but I have been bailed out many a times by forums so I am paying it back a bit...
Our backup camera started to have an intermittent black screen with a nice little pop up message to visit the dealer.. BAH...
Picked up an OE replacement online and did some searching on how to replace. Found a couple YouTube that came pretty close but missed some nuances..
1. When you get the hatch trim pull down a bit you can reach in with a long screw driver or a trim tool to help pop the trim retainers. There area couple that are pretty deep and take a bit or force to remove. This will help to keep them from breaking.
2. I used an 8mm socket to help depress the white plastic trim clips holding the rear bezel on. This helps to compress the tangs enough to be able to work them thru the hole without breaking any. A plastic trim tool and wood shims on the outside to apply some upward pressure helped keep things from popping back into place. There are 8 of those suckers.. and the most difficult ones are deep inside near the outer edges.
3. After replacement I checked the imagery and it was working, but was it missing the indicator bars. I could not find this anywhere on a google search whether or not it had to be programmed to the vehicle. I think it may depend on the vehicle options whether it is plug and play or you need to program it.. Well, on mine I needed to program it which consisted of going in with the scan tool and doing a LIM Module Activation. For my Autel scan tool it was under the Chassis service module (IIRC). I ran the LIM activation process, took about 20 seconds, power cycled the truck and checked the back-up camera... Indicators bars were back
Ford just issued a recall for this, but sadly my vehicle is not on the list.. The OE camera shipped was $80 and about 1 hour of time to swap out.
Anyway just wanted to share my experience and pay back a bit..
