We just bought a 2016 Expedition EL Limited. We traded in our 2009 Expedition for it. It's a huge upgrade from the 2009 Expy, and the family loves it. The only thing I noticed in that the fuel mileage (actual mileage, calculated) is not great. On the highway at around 70-75, averaging 15 mpg, around town maybe 12-13. I remember reading some posts about the initial fuel mileage with the Ecoboost engine not being great, but improving with time. I don't know if there is any truth to that, or if anyone could tell me their experience with an Ecoboost Expedition. I love the truck, and I'm not complaining (maybe I am a little), but I was expecting at least the same or better mileage from a V-6 vs. my 2009 5.4L Expedition. That got around 17 mpg highway and at least 13mpg around town. The boost in power in fantastic, and I know there is no such thing as a free lunch, but I was hoping for a little bit better news in the fuel mileage department.

I purchased a new 2015 Expedition Limited 4x4 in March - it now has 8,8xx miles on it. I drive it primarily in 2WD, but soon the bad weather will be here in the Midwest and I will be using the AWD or 4WD feature.

I drive a mix of rural highways (not expressways) and suburban roads, with an occassional crowded city road. I average 17.4 - 18.1 mpg in 2WD - usually with the a/c operating. Rarely do I have much cargo - usually at least several children and one or more adults (in addition to me....).

The vehicle is rated 15 mpg city / 20 mpg highway / 17 mpg combined. I have easily obtained these mileage figures. I have found that using mid-grade gasoline instead of the recommended regular 87 octane gasoline improves the mileage.

You bought the EL version which has slightly lower mpg ratings. Where I live, all fuel has 10-15% ethanol content, which lowers the mpg.

Do you have 4WD? Do you carry heavy loads? Towing?

I think the ~2 mpg difference can simply be chalked up to the OP's vehicle being an EL. I drove about a half dozen of each in the '09-'13 model years and there was a ~2 mpg difference between the 2 models across the board.

As an aside, the '09-'13 models did not have separate EPA ratings for the non-EL/EL despite the ~2 mpg difference. If they're still using the same practice for the '15-'16 models, I can understand why those with an EL are getting poorer mileage than they expected.

No heavy loads, just my family of 4. How much difference does it make driving in 4A vs. 2wd? Are there any advantages (fuel mileage or otherwise) in driving in either setting?

The fuel mileage increases slightly when using 2wd (vs AWD or 4HI). In 2wd, there is an increased chance of the rear tire(s) spinning or fishtailing when being driven on any wet road.

I see about 1 mpg decrease or more if I run in 4 auto instead of 2wd on dry pavement. If the system is kicking in a lot then it decreases more.

For the most part I run in 2wd mode until the first major snow fall here in Michigan then click it over to 4 auto and pretty much leave it there the entire winter.

I will say I installed a K&N cold air intake over the summer and while it claimed increase gas mileage I did not see any (though wasn't really expecting any), but what I did notice is an increase in gas mileage while towing. I would get around 10 or 12 mpg while towing, now I get around 14 which is great.

2015 Expedition EL Limited here. Around town I get 14.5 -15.5 MPG. Running 200 miles south to where we have a camper and boat, I can get 18-19 MPG at 75-80 MPG.

16,600 miles on the truck and the lifetime average is 15.8.

Had a 2011 F150 Screw 4x4 eco boost with 3.73 tow package and under the same conditions over 4 years it yielded the same millage +/-.

Had 2005 F150 with 3.31 and 5.4 for 4 years and it saw about the same.
My 2010 F350 V10 got 9.8 under the same conditions.

Not complaining about any of them... just sharing my experience.

Thanks for the input. It seems that others are getting better mileage, so I am going to wait and see as I get some mileage on it. I do have the 3.73 gears and the tow package. I'm sure the gearing takes a bite of of the mileage. Time will tell, but for now I am going to keep tracking it and hope for some improvement. Thanks for all the info.

I have a 15 Limited 2wd with the 3.15 rear end. At roughly 5,000 miles now with a life time average of 17.2 mpg. I have seen as good as 24 driving at 65 mph and down to 17-18 going 75-80 mph. Huge difference in fuel mileage from a small increase in speed!
