2017 Expedition EL XLT radio replacement

I have the '17 EL 2wd with the 4.2 LCD screen, backup camera, steering wheel radio controls...

I want to put an after market head unit in to be able to use CarPlay, among other features.

I contacted Crutchfield and they said you cannot replace the factory radio because it is integrated with the climate controls.

Has any one else had any experience with replacing this factory radio?

I've got a 2018 XLT with the 4.2" LCD. About to have it pulled out and replaced with an Alpine 11" head unit. Local installer at a corporate store here in San Antonio says he's done a few of them and tells me I'll retain all my controls. Waiting on a part. Hoping it will happen by this weekend...
