2025 Platinum Max engine failure

My wife and I rented a 2025 Expedition Platinum Max with 15000 miles on April 2,2026. Engine started knocking about 1/2 mile from car rental lot and received a “low oil pressure” warning message. Immediately shut off engine. Checked oil level ok. Tried restarting a few minutes later. It restarted and went into gear but generated the low oil message soon after. Not impressed. My 2001 has the original engine and trans and runs smooth and quiet.

Sadly I have to more look at the fact that it's a rental and who knows if in 15k miles its even had an oil change. we very rarely hear of completely dead 4th and 5th gen motors. that much i can be positive about.

it was a major rental car company. Oil showed full on the dipstick and appeared in very good condition. 30+ year ASE technician.

Then I'm sure you know these forums are often filled with 2/3rds complaints (just like my history on here) and if there were lots of these motors just flat out dying at 15k miles, we'd hear about it. But hey, Toyota is still replacing motors for essentially that outcome, guess maybe it's too early in the 5th gens to find out.

Yes I’m aware forums are full of complainers. I’m a gen1 guy and maintain many 5.4 3 valve expos and f150’s. I thought I would relay my personal experience to the gen5 community if it helps anyone.

I understand that you are an experienced auto mechanic, but I probably wouldn't base the reliability of a car on a rental.

Furthermore, the 3.5 Eco has been out for over 15 years, and has never been associated with low-mileage failures to my knowledge.
