My 2018 Ford Expedition had condensation in the 3rd brake light and wasn't working.

I bought a new one to replace it. I can't figure out how to remove the old one. No Google search or YouTube search shows anyone explaining how to do this. Looks like it just snaps in but I am afraid to break the housing.

Anyone know how to remove this? Any help is appreciated.

I had mine done at the dealer under warranty. I believe they had to remove the interior rear hatch and spoiler IIRC (not 100% sure).

Wanted to follow up here since I had the same issue and the carcarekiosk video is useless.

It's very easy to remove the remove the spoiler and replace the chmsl. Pop the rear glass, remove the 4 10mm bolts (2 going through each hinge) then the 4 t25 torx screws going through the glass. You then need to release the 2 plastic clips going through the hinges (pliers work well) and the spoiler will be free. I didn't even disconnect the electric/washer fluid lines, just laid the spoiler back against the roof. To get the CHMSL out it's then 3 7mm bolts ( a nut driver works well for this) and then releasing the 2 clips (one on each side, reference your replacement part for where to push).

Found the part online for ~150 bucks. Took me 15 minutes to replace, the dealer said it would be about 500$ to replace. YMMV

Had the same issue, thanks to the post above by rs4-380 it was an easy fix. Don't bother with the carcarekiosk video. The clips on the light were tricky to release, be careful not to damage the spoiler. CHMSL replacement part number was JL1Z-13A613-C for Ford 2019 Expedition XLT, total was $160 including shipping. Dealer quote was laughable.

My 3rd brake light only has about 10% of the total LED's working. The housing shows condensation so Im pretty sure that is what caused the LED's to fail. I plan on bringing in my 2019 expy to the dealer and replace this light since its going in anyways for other things. I have a Ford PremiumCare ESP with the LED/light housing option. Has anyone been successful getting the ESP to cover this even if the LEDs failed due to outside water making its way somehow into the housing? I have a feeling they are going to reject the coverage since it was water that cause the failure.......I was reading through my plan papers and it mentioned something about a covered part not being covered if it was an outside thing that caused it to fail in this case "water"

Wow, that's a whole lotta screwin going on there.....much more involved than on my 011EL, just 2 screws, wiggle the assembly loose, remove the washer tube, pull the old one off, clean around where the gasket was, then replace in the reverse order.... done, done & done !

Things are much more difficult and expensive to replace with new cars today. Things were much more easier and made with common sense in the past

I just went through the same thing on my 2019 Expedition. A friend of mine told me my 3rd brake light was out. Not sure how long it's been out. Extended warranty doesn't cover it. I bought a replacement online for $150. Took it all apart and plugged the new one in and it still doesn't work. The original looks fine so I put it back in figuring it's something else. I didn't see any evidence of corrosion or water damage. Plug looked fine. What are the odds the new wouldn't work either? Do you guys have any other suggestions? I don't see that there is a specific fuse for the 3rd brake light. Hoping it would be something simple like that. Thanks!

Maybe grab a voltmeter and a friend, pull the old one out, and have a friend press on the brake, check for 12V at the connector. That will tell you right away if it's bad lights or a wiring/electrical issue.

That’s a good idea. I really don’t want to spend a fortune having the dealer figure it out. If it’s not getting any power I wouldn’t know where to go from there.

If there's no voltage at the harness, then it's going to be a pain. You'll likely have to trace the array of wires from the back forwards, it could be as simple as a loose harness someplace else. I doubt there's anyway to test the circuits with something like forscan but maybe a dealer tool can look for issues. There likely won't be a fuse for just the 3rd light, it's probably part of the overall brake light circuit so it won't be that easy. Additionally, if you know the +/- leads in the harness, you could just connect the 3rd light to the battery with a short wire, I would have to assume the brake light runs at 12V and not some ridiculous voltage or something, but then again, who knows.

The alternative is to find a wiring diagram so that you're not tracing that thing through panels all over the place. Is your vehicle under any kind of warranty?

I appreciate all of your input. I have an appointment to take care of a recall. I may just ask if they can check that out as well. Thank you!
