Interesting...
Battery died, jumped it and now 4wd appears to work. I switched to 4h and 4l and I heard the clicking and the "4x4" light came on. I'll see if it's working later. I can't remember, is the "4x4" light come on for both 4h and 4l, or does each gear have it's own light?

That would suggest electrical gremlin. Possibly gem module?!

the 4x4 light comes on for both, then you have a separate 4lo light as well.

and as for my dunes driving i go to glamis. super soft sugar sand. people always look at me weird when they see a tank driving around in just 2wd. haha

you know how to put it into 4lo right? shifter in N stop moving, shift to 4lo. hear a clunk and put in D or what ever gear. i would check all wiring, all fuses and if all else fails change the shift motor.

not that i think about it i had a problem like this one time. out in the desert hit some silt and went to put into 4hi, didnt work, did nothing. turned truck off, back on and good to go. i hate these electronic shifters, rather have the lever.

Installed the new shift motor and everything is working fine. I'm glad I saw the installation vid. Otherwise I wouldn't have known about switching some of the wires/pins to the new harness.
Very easy, took less than an hour. I wish everything on cars were that easy. I had to take it in to replace plugs a few weeks ago. That pissed me off. There was no way I was going to be able to change the plugs without killing myself.

Here's the old one:

I'm taking her out on the beach tomorrow. Though I still don't know if the shift motor was the problem, since the 4wd started working in full after the battery died the other day. Oh well, hopefully that was the problem.
Thanks guys!

Mine looks like that but works fine. Surface rust on the exterior of motor...
Thinking electrical gremlin since it began to work after you jumped it?!?

Goodluck!!

I tend to think you might be right. With a lot of luck it's not and I fixed the problem yesterday. I won't know until it happens again.

Took a nice leisurely drive on the beach this mornings, and no problems. Time will tell.

wish i could driving on the beach locally. :(

Unfortunately there's not much I can drive on due to "piping plover" nesting. Maybe a mile total right now. In August it opens up for miles. It's federale land. They stole it from us back in the 60's. Charge a hefty fee to use my land too, $150 for April-November. But it's beautiful.

all ways something isnt it? pismo beach was the same way for a little bit. the dunes were closed cause of a bird that nested there. last day of closer and the environmentalist went to count the bird. 0. not 1 bird. the animals around went and ate the birds. the birds nested there because of the off roaders. once they reopened the dunes the birds came back.
