I have a 1999 Eddie Bauer with the 5.4. Here recently it has been developing a noise that sounds like it is coming from the lifter valley. It starts at about 2,500 RPM and goes to about 4,500 RPM. It almost sounds like a knock but, the sound is not coming from the bottom end. It makes great oil pressure and still runs like a top. It just concerns me a bit since I am a FF/EMT and greatly depend on it daily. I have had the 4.6 SOHC and DOHC motors apart and know that they have the internal balance shaft in the lifter valley. I am thinking about a junkyard motor and doing a JDM Engine and Cam Kit on a freshened up block. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

So it seems that from doing some research on the site, I have found that there have been some rattling issues associated with heat shields and such. I have also read that some of you have had the rattling on start up. It does rattle on start up but I believe I have located the source of the sound. I am pretty sure it is coming from the excessively loose heat shields on the exhaust. Which will soon be fixed when I do the headers and full, single 3" back through a Borla XR-1 and out a 3.5" Borla Rolled Tip behind the right rear tire.
