My engine is shuddering, and has been on and off for 4+ months, and it's started to get worse recently. I'm not totally sure what the problem is, or how to fix it, any ideas? This is on a 2010 Expedition with about 190,000 miles on it

I would start by having the vehicle scanned for any trouble codes, which may point you in the direction for diagnosis and repair.

Some major auto parts stores will scan your vehicle for no charge and provide you with the codes, and a printout of any possible fixes.

If there are no codes stored, you will have to check basic items such as throttle body bore dirty, vacuum leak with hoses, stuck PCV valve, etc.

Are you sure the engine is shuddering and not the transmission when you drive the vehicle?

I'm pretty sure it's an engine issue, but the transmission idea is also viable. The shuddering happens mostly when slowing down and stopping, almost like it doesn't want to stop. I'll get it diagnosed as soon as I get the chance, thanks for the tip!

what you mean by “doesn’t want to stop”? She like giving a little gas by itself and you have to press the brakes harder to stop and or idles high?

Idles really rough, sorry for not clarifying, I think it's the cam phasers, but I'm not sure

Your timing is failing. There are about 5-10 things that will kick off lights or codes and they all seem pretty tame. A sensor here and sensor there. Then one of your chains breaks.

Check the basics first such as ignition coil harness connections and boots. I had a loose/unplugged connection and gave shuddering without codes. I've read someone having a cracked coil boot grounding the spark and not igniting properly. Next I'd suggest checking the spark plugs themselves. Time to replace coils/plugs?

Just got it scanned, sorry it took a while, looks like something with the timing but I could be wrong.

Definitely looks like your phasers are going to need replaced along with a full timing job. I'm shocked that wasn't on the list of recommended maintenance. There's good info in this video here about it.
