I think most people would say the 4R100 is the better choice, and you see those built more often. I have an E4OD in my truck and it runs just fine at 220k. I think there are more parts for the 4R100 available though.

have one of the first production '97s w/ the E4OD; Blue Oval replaced the torque converter @ just shy of 18K miles as they couldn't find anything wrong per se' when the flashing light on the O/D button illuminated.

I also installed the MagHytec over-sized trans pan when I added the supercharger etc. back in Dec '98 and change filter/fluid every 25K miles w/ no probs to date.
