I am sure this question has been asked many times and I can't seem to find it. Sorry Admins, I tried searching.

My neighbor has a 2003 Expedition. It currently does not have a Rear Seat DVD player. I am headed to a salvage yard tomorrow and they have plenty of old Expeditions to pick from.

If I grab the DVD unit, and all the associated wiring headed to the Radio, will I need anything else to get it working? It currently has a CD/FM receiver. If The radio is not available from the salvage vehicle, will I be able to plug in the respective pins into his existing radio or is that also required? I am just trying to anticipate what Else I might need.

I got all the diagrams I could find from BBBMotor. I'll post them as soon as I annotate them. The only part of the system diagrams I couldn't get was for illumination.

I found a post by some guy and he plugged an 04 DVD unit into his 2003(w/factory dvd) radio after shifting the pins over 4 slots. I found diagrams from 2001 and 2005. Sadly not 2003/04. 2001 had only power, audio, IR/ Ground/ 2005 Adds ASYSON signal (like a CD Changer) and Audio Corporate Protocol. ACP is what a Taurus uses for the Front headunit to control the radio receiver in the Trunk. Update, I have found additional information confirming that 03-04 are compatible with a pin shift.

I imagine I am safest getting a DVD unit and wiring from a 2003/04. But do 2001 and 2005 ModelYears overlap with 03-04? I know this is probably too late to ask, but why not write this up for the next trip.

Here is what I plan.

Obtaining the following equipment from a Salvage Vehicle.
  • DVD unit
  • Bracket
  • Wiring from the DVD to the Radio and all connectors in between.
  • Respective CD radio receiver if not already taken
  • Rear Integrated Control Panel (if available)
I'd get the headliner too, however i doubt it would fit in my 2008 Mariner

I have added OAT, Heated side mirrors, a compass module, keypads, and autolamps to my ford vehicles in the past. So I know that this is possible. Being practical is a different question all together.

Additionally, I have seen early to mid Mercury Monetary mini Vans with similar units, has anyone looked at those?

Well, as far as wiring goes, it may be pre-wired like other mods. I found this pulling down a headliner on an 04 without rear sat dvd. It's behind the driver side c-pillar

Here's one that pulled. I grabbed one from an 04 that was less scuffed up.

It took over an hour to pick apart the harness.

I ended up mutilating the headliner of the salvage vehicle. Thankfully it was already damaged.

It took over a hour to sort out the entire hardness that was GLUDED DOWN THE ENTIRE WAY to the c pillar. 7aa7815d5bd9d8d57fdbe1ed75cd8980.jpg

Bracket.

Getting the bracket was a fun exercise.

There on the 03 salvage vehicle, there are a handful of fasteners.

Ultimately, after you remove the four 5.5mm screws for dvd player, there are four 8mm bolts that old in the bracket to the roof. These are round holes with speed nuts. Once you remove the four outer bolts the bracket shimmies out. You can recover the speed nuts with a dental pick.

Do this, push the speed nut inward as far as it will go to take stress off the retainer. Pry down with the pick and the speed nuts should slide off.

Do not remove the 6mm bolts here. It will not separate. There a #2 Philips screws installed in the opposing direction.

The end of the bracket is just above the rear doors. Seen here. ca16615fd700d66761c9adf3b7dbe718.jpg

All the associated wiring for the DVD player splits above center rear passenger. The DVD and moon roof wiring goes to the driver side and down to separate intermediate connectors in the c pillar. The A/c controls in the front overhead console go down the passenger c-pillar. This is also where the DVD player gets the second ground wire and illumination wire.
