No matter what position I put the vent selector in only the windshield defrost keeps working and it isn't switching from one to another. Turning it off actually turns off the system but it won't get out of defrost.

All vents are controlled by vacuum. look for the vacuum line that goes into the firewall and you will probable see that it is cracked and broken. Cut out the bad section and slip a new flexible line over both ends and all vents will work. I took a piece of the line to my hardware store and got some gas line that fits perfectly.

I had the same problem with the air. A vacuum line had come off. I put it back on and we were back to normal.

I'm chasing down the same issue in my '04. Two questions I hope someone can answer. 1) is the red arrows showing proper routing for that line? 2) What is the proper name for that vacuum valve that the green arrow is pointing at and where can one be bought? (if needed).

Man this repair was one hell of a PITA, every single hose was dry rotted and all the elbows were cracked open, the old hoses ends wouldn't come off the T fitting ends without breaking the T fittings, such an annoying position to be in.

Like an idiot I didn't take a pic before I pulled everything apart to take to the auto parts store to find replacements so when I came back it was a giant puzzle trying to figure out what goes where. a ten minutes job took me 2 days.... FAIL!

To answer your question it's one of these plastic connectors holding the elbow to the T fitting, pictured below.

I also included pics of how mine is now as it sits in case you need to use it for reference (sorry my battery is in the way but the principle is there.)

Hey habbibie, why not go by a repair shop or wreckers, bring a pad of paper and pen, and your camera. That's what I'd do. Every big job you forget a week later how things go back together. When I used to rebuild complete motorcycle engines, I would set everything on my bench very carefully, and made sure no one went near the parts.

So, in your second picture you are showing the line I have repaired, marked in red arrows in my picture. To your recollection, did route how mine is? Yours disappears where mine did downward and up against the firewall. When I pulled it to pull it from the boot but it came all the way out. Looking I could only find what appeared to be a broken line disappearing into the harness to the right so I joined them. It didn't fix the issue. So I'm wondering if I need to keep searching for another leak Or if I actually hooked it wrong.

The one line with the arrow red on mine it goes through the firewall in the plug just below your ground stud, in your pic it doesn't seem to go through like mine does.

Here's a more close up pic for you, if this doesn't help I can draw it out on a paper for you. Also there's one line that goes nowhere and is just sitting there loose, not sure y but been like that since I acquired this truck.

Also pay attention to the black/yellow valves, they only allow air to flow one way.

You've got an issue with the eatc system. Our crown victoria cabs used to do the same thing. It's possible one of the vaccum diagrams that close one of the blenders is not holding . Run a diagnostics and see what pops up. Keep us posted.

Daaamn it's back...drove it for a while and it defaults back to defrost.......what the heck is going on here??
Possibly a Loose connection near the firewall, mine did the same thing yesterday, I wiggled the hose going into the firewall and kinda pressed it in so to say and that seemed to correct the problem. I'll keep doing that if I have to rather than tare apart the entire dash for one lousy hose connection.
