airbox mod

this is an easy modification that can be done in about an hour for those of us who choose to use the K & N drop in filter. remove the intake tube and filter from the airbox. to remove the air box from the body lift it, from the bottom, from it's mount on the fender well. (it is mounted useing posts that fit in rubber grommets and will probably not just pop out. a little lube--i used armour-all-- will help a lot.) use masking tape to mark the layout to drill pilot holes. the first row of holes are centered 1 1/2" from the large opening, the second row 4" from the large opening. the holes are centered 2 1/2" apart and offset making 6 openings in the first row and 7 in the second.

once the pilot holes are in place remove the masking tape and finish drilling the holes with a 1 1/2" hole saw. the hole saw will probably leave some plastic burrs that can be removed with a round file.

reinstall the air box and filter and enjoy

Sounds like a simple Mod to get more airflow into the airbox, but won't it cause hot air from under the hood to be drawn into the intake tract of the engine? I've always been told that cold air is more dense and therefore better for engine performance. Anybody have any thoughts on this subject?

Exactly. I have never understood those "cold air intake" systems. They all take air in from under the hood...after it has passed through the radiator and around a hot engine.

Now, I can see where the system used is restrictive, which can be as bad as using hot air, but there is another purpose for where the air is drawn from!!!! It is to prevent sucking in water and dust/dirt/mud, etc into the intake system. In the stock setup, air comes into the air filter through a chamber behind the fenderwell, which because of the baffling it provides, will prevent most stuff kicked up from being sucked in.

I for one am going to keep pulling air in at the stock location. Maybe, when I try to turn my Exby into 9 second 1/4 miler, I may change this, but not for now
